4th day of my skunk streak
I am feeling very disheartened by my fishing lately, I have been focusing on catfishing and using the 2 1/2 oz slip sinker weight, offset octopus circle hooks of all sizes and just about everything for bait.
I just don't think I have the patience for it. Most likely it's because it is winter; that's what I am telling myself at least.
Just reviewed a winter catfishing video on the YouTube Catfishing and Carp channel (the guy from Virginia). His advice is to review the water available for deep spots, other deep areas near the mouths of streams flowing into larger bodies, and other spaces (he describes) as being gathering places for large groups of mixed-species fish populations. The key apparently has to do with temperature, and the still deeper places tend to concentrate the big guys, who apparently go into near-hibernation in the depths as surface temps get lower. I really enjoy that channel, as the Dad is really trying to turn his passion for fishing into a real character-building journey for him and his kids.
There are times when you are doing everything perfectly and the fish are just stupid. It is all their fault.
What are you using for bait Jess? Are you losing any bait or is it just laying there? Cold water can really slow things down. I used to do a lot of catfishing and my bible was a book by Doug Stange "Catfish Fever". Lots of good tips in there. As mentioned above, seek out those deep holes and fish those. And be patient.
What kind of catfish are you after flatheads, blues, or channel cats.

Do you have any other info on that Youtube channel? My son and I are big into following good, local channels.

Jess, go up to the search button, click, and then put in catfishing. There are some thoughts and ideas, I'm not a catfisher, they don't seem to like flies.
Any power plant lakes close?
Keep at jess you will get one have patience and good luck to you.
I’ve heard finding shallower back waters in the winter is more favorable to find big cats in the winter ... google earth your fishing location and target some areas with shallower water and some sort of structure on the edges and fish in / near those areas on the bottom with very smelly bait . Hot dogs cut in 2 inch pieces soaked in red coolaide and put some salt and garlic in the bag let sit overnight with just enough water to cover the amount of bait you cut up . Makes good bait for cats easy to hook also is smelly and attractive
Thanks everyone for the tips. I will respond to individual questions shortly; had to drive to Wichita Falls from Austin yesterday and I am exhausted!
Another good you tuber to follow is Steve Douglas, aka the catfish dude. Steve has not done too many recent videos lately, but his past videos are very informative.
