I just saw a piece on the national news about climate change and warming waters are shrinking fish size. They talked about salmon and how salmon spawning is changing because of water temp and better oxygen in the cooler water and its making them smaller. Restaurant owners are saying the salmon fillets they get are smaller than what they got 10 years ago. I'm not a scientist so I don't understand it and can't explain. I briefly looked online and info is out there. They talk about ocean fish, the smaller species are getting smaller, the larger species are getting bigger. By 2100 60% of todays fish won't exist. I'm sure they'll be replaced because that's what nature does. Thought I would throw that out there.

I believe that the fish are simply over fished and do not have time to grow larger. The big ones are not primarily food fish. It happens here with specks and flounder. Lots of pressure on these.
The real reason to use a backing is to use less yardage of expensive braided line. If the line is installed correctly it will not slip.

Waited to post this until today. Many of you will remember this song. This version sung by David Draiman with Disturbed. May we never forget.

That is a great song. I hope we never forget what the most dangerous people that belong to the most dangerous cult in the world did to Americans on 9/11/01.
Why would you use such a heavyweight line and then have such a light leader?
I use the opposite 10 lb. line and 20 lb Fluor leader. I fish for specks and red drum. The heavy leader is to stand up against teeth and chaffing. Light weight braid is for longer cast.
The twist you described sounds more like, what are called wind knots, that usually are cause by loading too much line on the real or not keeping a little tension on the line while retrieving the line. I use 10 lb. line and have no problem as long as those two things do not happen.
It can be done you have to put on spool from reel then from that spool to another spool then back to reel. Easy.
I fish a lot and have wondered the same thing. I have also wondered why some people are into watching sports when I would not care if any sports were played ever.
I forgot to say it was at a flea market.
I found a fillet knife that was made with a flat left side of the handle and the blade was very close to the flat side. It is a G96 Easy Angle. It works very well but blade is a little stiffer than I like. I had never seen one like it cost me $5.
The biggest reason a backing is used on a spinning reel is to save putting a large amount of expensive braided line on the reel.
It still comes down to too much speed and not letting the boat ride the wake. He should have slowed even more.
I can only go by what he said in his story of cutting his speed to 20mph which on the water is pretty fast in a small boat.
I guess I am one of those guys but I do know that 20mph is too fast in a small boat crossing a big wake from another boat. Your boat did not have enough time to ride up the wake so it stuck it’s nose into the big wake and you got wet. I would bet that next time you will slow down.
SLOW DOWN !! In a spot like that, that’s all.

That is a great description of wave action!
Ben you and your GD are cool as cucumbers! Glad you are safe and sound, ur boat too! That’s why I try to avoid weekends too. Take care buddy.
Something about his story the way he described everything sounds, not right.
Why didn’t he slow down below 20mph, that is still pretty fast especially in rough water. Hope he learned a lesson and not to just bitch about big boats.
Sometimes you wonder if some questions are real or a joke.
