Why are some people just so drawn to fishing, while others aren't?

As a life-longer fisherman this question is always on my mind.
A lot of anglers like to say ''it's an escape from modern life, it's peaceful and relaxing'' which is true, but let's be real, most anglers start out as kids, and this sort of stuff isn't on our minds when we are 10 years old.
For as long as I can remember, I've been fascinated with fishing, I can't walk by water without taking a few minutes to scout out some fish in the margins.
The majority of people just don't see the appeal, we've all taken a friend fishing who just didn't enjoy it...
Why do you think some people are so drawn to fishing?

The mystery, the peace, the calming effect, the beauty, the suspense, the challenge, the excitement (thrill) of outsmarting a creature with a lure, need I go on?

Right on. As well as a healthy food supply if taken from good clean water. Its the fun of the chase

YES to all the above. We like the communing with nature, the outsmarting part and you Deljohn are right on with that patience thing! I’ve taken non fishers out who couldn’t wait to get back in - they couldn’t understand cast after cast without catching anything. Tried to explain that is why they call it fishing not catching - never understood, like talking to a deaf ear. Never took them again. 👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿

Must be in our DNA. Hunter/gathering effect. (Although I release most of my fish). Like others have stated, I enjoy the relaxation and getting back to nature.

I don't know the answer, but I expect it is the same reason some could live in a mall rather than ever go outside, or some who enjoy the gift shop rather than the beauty of a national park. Then there are some who get more excited by seeing a new car go by than seeing a deer standing roadside. Why do some people prefer to enjoy some of the best fishing lakes in the country by buzzing around at dangerous speeds on a jet ski. More and more these days, folk even enjoy a good video fishing game over a day fishing. What can I say?

Yes GLA,, I also believe some people don’t find it relaxing instead find troublesome and frustrating,, I feel for those,,,

I also have fished most of my life.I do wonder about this also.I can say I do fell its where we belong outdoors with nature.There are so many beautiful things in this world we all take for granted.Just a few minutes outside you can discover things you can't imagine and the stories that go with these plants and animals are also fascinating to learn and ponder how they ever survived.I feel I am the totally free of my responsibilities when I am fishing deep sea in the Gulf.No stress.just catch some fish and enjoy the day.I would say of us are more independent for the outdoors,and embrace it, while others are afraid of it.Thanks for reading.

I don’t go fishing per se. I (HUNT) fish.
Sure it’s relaxing as in it’s not working. But I very rarely have a relaxing day on the water. It can sometimes be a lot of work.
If I’m not catching fish, I’m seeking them out. Trying to figure out the combination of all the variables involved to develop a pattern that is most productive
For me I like the challenge more than anything else. Been this way to one extent or another since I was 5 or 6.
It starts with catching something , then it progresses to numbers, then to biggest of the species
It eventually evolves into catching the hardest most challenging fish
That’s where musky come into play for me.
Then it becomes decision of what to do with the available time on the water.

The bottom line is its fun , when we were kids life was doing what you’re told or having fun. as adults we do what we have to and try to make time for fun not much difference

The feeling of reeling in a fish can’t be explained. Caught a little bass the other day, wasn’t more than a pound. But he was a jumper, jumped three or four times. Kissed him between the eyes and gently placed him back in the water. You have to experience it to understand.

We are all different thank goodness. I’ve always enjoyed fishing. But in early midlife I focused on it. I had just killed, dressed and hung up a deer. Something clicked. I had always butchered my own deer and suddenly I could smell and taste blood just thinking about it. And I was no longer interested in killing. That was the last one. With fishing you can catch and release if you choose. I eat plenty of fish but it’s a choice. Still hard to explain but I love fishing. I will shoot the occasional nuisance pest but I don’t hunt anymore.
