Do I need a mono backing when using braid? If so how much do I need to add? What’s the reason for doing so?

I use mono has a backing stops line from slipping on spool just a few yards try to match the dim of backing to main line

Depends on the spool on your reel. Some are designed to take braid directly, some not. Sure doesn't hurt regardless. A few yards of cheap mono and your braid won't slip around on the spool and when the front end gets a little worn you can strip off the line and turn it around - the price of good braid being what it is, save you a little money. Can't hardly beat that.

Being a cheapie myself I always use backing whether it be mono, fluro or braid. Have never got down to the backing, but then again have never pursued tuna.

Just as Spirit said, it will save you money, and extend the life time of the line you choose to use. Just Sayin...RJS

I place a piece of Electricians tape , 4 inches over the braid, that stops all sliping !

Yes. You shouldn’t need more than 150 yards.

I agree with agatemaggot, electric tape work great and takes up no space

I use maybe 15 yards of Neon Red 10# mono for backing my 5000 and 8000 reels for salt fishing. Spools have rubber added to avoid line slippage. I just want to know the line will break when I get to the backing and the rod and reel doesn’t get pulled out of someone’s hands. I don’t use backing to save money on line but to save the rod and reel. But, we are talking 50/150/300 pound fish. Bass fishing is a different story of course. Unknown what it is you are fishing for but that’s my take on it. Good luck!

I use electrical tape on my spool. Works fine.

I fish all braided line on all my reels and I tie directly to the spool and use Scotch tape unless it has a peg made on the spool I have never had a problem.

The real reason to use a backing is to use less yardage of expensive braided line. If the line is installed correctly it will not slip.
