Spent three days at Clearlake with my buddy Scott.
We’re both good fisherman. I’m 71 and have been fishing since I was 12.
In three days we never even got a strike. Bait fish everywhere. A million of them. I started fishing Clearlake 20 years ago but have never seen the lake so clear. You can see the bottom. You can see bass everywhere. However nothing will bite.
The water was like glass.
We were skunked. I asked 6 other boats how they were doing. They ALL gave me thumbs down.

Halem, my guess is that the front coming in shut the bite down, I've experienced that with bass too many times,,when the pressure stabilizes it will be interesting to try it again,,,,,good luck

Anyone know how the trout/bass fishing on Folsom Lake is ? Not sure if they are stocking it and the drought might have taken it's toll.

Theregoesanother,,I took a buddy out on thursday, 4/13 and the bite was solid on spots to about 2 1/2 pounds and a couple of smallmouths,,,went back with my son and fished in the wind yesterday 4/16 and hit it hard for only 5 fish all on a root beer power worm,,really tough day, think this little front coming in shut it down,,,all fish were pres pawn looking so its running late and I expect it to really turn on after the front in a few days,,probably get out in a couple days but might hit delta,,,gonna fish bay for halibut Saturday and ill post if anything worth posting,,,tight lines,,,,,,

The friend of mine (Walt) that went fishing with me lives about ten minutes away, his family runs cattle on over 10,000 acres that seems like it's the middle of nowhere. He has a good sized pond that's fed by springs to where it is full all the time. He wants me to come over there and try for Crappie since I have a boatload of Crappie lures. He also has a neighbor that wants him to come over and catch a couple hundred Crappie, he says the pond is loaded with them and wants them thinned down, I'll be curious to see how big those are.

makes since I almost always fish for salmon with a down riggers. never tried the circle hooks for salmon not sure how they would work on spoons or plastic squids. have you tried them on these? like to know if any one has and how they work

Dc
No, I don't think they would be as good as a j hook when moving like trolling or casting or jigging,,we have to really let them eat it and no hook set just reel when the rod is loaded up,,,hardest part is not setting the hook!!!but it does let you fish light tackle so it a lot of fun when conditions are right,,got my fingers crossed for a good season this year!!!!

we can only use barbless hooks for salmon and I lose very few by comeing off the hook but maybe it is the brand or style or size of barbless hook that makes the difference

Dc
I know when I fish lighter tackle off down riggers and play the fish longer I lose more,,,when I troll lead with a release and use my " meat pole" and really bring them to the boat I land more of them,,not as much fun but more fillets in the freezer or on my neighbors' grills!!! my favorite way to fish for them is mooching,,gotta use barb less circle hooks,,seems like the circle hooks stay attached pretty well once they ate hooked and that's pretty light tackle so a bunch of fun,,,now I'm Jonesin to get back out there,,,,

I read an article written by a guide that was making the case for the fact that barbless hooks are not the bad thing they are cracked up to be, and it sounded very credible.

They were making the case that as you have a big hard fighting fish, that the barb tears a much bigger hole as the fish fights than a clean barbless hook. In my experience, as is the author's perspective, I have landed as many fish with barbless hooks as I do with barbed hooks...keep the pressure on and the hook will stay in.

My point being (no pun intended) that barbless hooks are not going to be the cause of losing fish.

I don't know,,back when we could use barbs and trebled I never lost a salmon in the ocean,,well, maybe once or twice,,I've had guys on my boat that are losing 5 out of 6 now,,sure makes catch and release easier though!!!

I haven't used it yet read it here. Yes it's very old. I think I'm going to change out the switch to a pmw speed controller, that way I can have forward and reverse. I'll keep the switch to keep it original.

Snag
It looks really good,I wouldn't use it and just hold on to it until you find the right buyer,,,or collect it yourself if you are into they sort of thing,,,I kick myself over things I have got rid of inhindsight,,,,

For Sacramento, you could try the Sacramento River Deep Water Ship Channel. Lots of bank fishing on its south side west of Jefferson Blvd in West Sacramento. However - this is mostly bait fishing for strippers.
For LMB, a good place for bank fishing is Hogback Island fishing access west of Walnut Grove. Good place to toss plastic worms.

Pillars
I was going to mention that too but it's a little out of sacramento,,,I caught my pb lmb there about 52 years ago on a bobber and nightcrawler,,only 10 pounder I have caught so far,,,I will be taking my granddaughter there in a few weeks,,that and Rancho seco are easy places to take a 4 year old,,,took my kids to hog back when they were little and it seems we caught more small mouth there then largemouth,,,bluegill and small stripes too of course,,,good safe spot for kids,,occasionally ill launch there to troll steamboat or the sacto river for stripers, very convenient spot...thxx

Hi Pro. Is parking allowed near the Freeport Bridge? It was posted for a long time. I'd given up on the old spots.

Sport
Sorry, but I can't say for sure, now that I have boats I never fish from the bank anymore,,I do see vehicles parked in the area but I don't know if it is posted or not,,also, I always parked at cliffs marina and walked about 1/8 of a mile to fish downriver from there, don't know if that is ok anymore either,,,sorry

thanks! Do you know of anything a bit closer to Sacramento?

Todd
There is a spot called the minnow hole just downstream from Scotts seafood near 43rd avenue and riverside, the bar The Trap is very near, historically a great place for stripes and shad, I fished there in the 70s with my grandfather and saw some huge stripers caught on jumbo minnows, back before i had a boat, also a good spot for salmon in the fall, easy access with ample parking along levee, you might also try the riverbank on downstream side of Freeport bridge, either side of river or a mile or so further down just below Cliff,s marina for catfish or stripers,,on sacramento side (same as cliffs) good spot for shore bound catfish catchers,,,(crawdad tails if cliffs still sells them )or about 4 miles down around Scribners,s bend on Sacramento (not yolo) side of river for surgeon and cats and stripers,,,just a few of the spots I learned over the years,,,good luck!!
