Hey all, I’m gonna be in Phoenix in a couple of weeks for work (Scottsdale specifically) but I plan on spending a few extra days afterwords and was looking to fish a bit. I’m not too picky on what I target, but I never say no to fat bass. If anyone has any tips or locations within a couple of hours of the city I would really appreciate it. Thanks all, Fish on

There are “urban lakes” all over the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. . Google Arizona Game and Fish website for locations. Best bass fishing near Scottsdale is Roosevelt Lake. About a two hour drive. Other nearby lakes are Saguaro (closest), Bartlett, and Pleasant.

I’ve started learning a lot of knots and was wondering what you favourite line to lure knot is. My personal favourite is the Trilene knot because I can tie it when my hands are cold.

I fished for Tarpon in Costa Rica. As you may know, they are world class fighters. My guide said his life depended on catching fish and said he used the Palomar knot and had never had one fail. He said if I fished for a living I would use the same knot. It’s very easy to tie. I also agree with tying it to a snap or snap-swivel if you anticipate frequent lure changes.

My gf and I are doing a road trip to Sedona for 5 days in mid-February to do some hiking and fishing in the area. I am looking for some trout fishing tips in Oak Creek, or any creeks in that area. I'm planning on bringing my fly rod and spinning set up. Any tips for February trout fishing in Sedona?

Planning on fishing mostly midges and egg flies on the fly rod.

Fish the honey hole just downstream from Manzanita campground on Oak Creek.

I've never cooked trout. I'm wanting to try it, even if I have to go to the grocery store to buy one as a test.

What I've read makes it look pretty simple. Butter, garlic, lemon, bake 400F for a few minutes.

What are your favorite ways that aren't too difficult for a trial run?

try to keep fish alive until an hour or less before cooking. the sooner after death you cook it the better it will taste.
cut off head and tail. gut it. wash it clean. sprinkle salt and pepper on flesh. put thin lemon slices on flesh. wrap in butter coated tinfoil. cook in oven or open fire until flesh is firm. let it rest for one full minute before eating.

Planning a weekend trip to Santa Cruz, Capitolla, Moss Landing in February. Targeting Rock fish, Cabezon, Ling Cod, maybe even some crab snaring. Looking for info, hot spots, tricks and tips.

I will document the trip and post picks of where we went and what worked. HIT ME UP!

P.S. if anybody wants to join in let me know. Let's meet up.

have only fished there in the summer so not sure if this is applicable to your trip.
It's a bit of a challenge to get there at my age, but at the tip of the Santa Cruz marina jetty, on the Crow's Nest side, you can cast 2-3 inch creme/white plastic worms/jig heads into the back wash of the breaking waves and catch flounder/halibut, or you can throw all the standard stuff (shrimp, squid, cut bait, etc.) out into the deeper water and see what's biting. Also would try Manresa beach for good surf fishing (sea bass). mid-point of SCruz pier is good for using Sabiki rig to catch shiners and use for bait in deeper water or elsewhere.
there's a fishing store on 41st avenue in SCruz and another one in the marina parking lot just down from Johnny's Harborside Cafe. go to either and get some good advice.

Headed to Morro Bay Saturday morning with my daughter and her boyfriend to do some beach and pier fishing. We got to Morro rock about 9:30 am. The weather was perfect!! Blue sky, no fog, a little windy. The tide was up and the surf was really high making it pretty much impossible, or at least not very fun to fish off the beach so we headed to the south side of the rock to fish in the harbor.

We were using cut baits, shad, squid, shrimp on a slip sinker rig, drop shot, carolina rig, a little bit of everything.

I caught a nice little kelp bass with in the first hour so we got pretty pumped up on that but that was pretty much it until sunset. We watched the sunset from the south jetti then headed back into the harbor to fish. We fished off the rocks until about 7:00pm. I caught another bass and Skyler caught 2 rock fish. A grass and a Copper from what we could tell from the species chart I downloaded.

We got up Sunday and headed to Cambria to check out a beach spot. Moonstone beach I think. Right at the north end of town off hwy 1. That spot is beautiful and would have been good fishing if the surf wasn't so crazy. Caught nothing but kelp.

From there we went to Cayucos to fish the pier. It was windy at the end of the pier and the waves were so high they would mist you when the sets came in. Nice sunny day though. We posted up there for a couple hours. Put a #4 Sabiki rig on my daughter's pole with shrimp pieces. Got a couple bites on that but we weren't able to reel anything in. A bunch of fishermen rolled in about 3:00pm and crowded the pier so we packed up and headed back to our Morro rock spot.

Watched another beautiful sunset and fished the harbor again till about 6:00pm. Skyler caught a Vermilion rock fish(from what we could tell).

All in all the boys reeled in 5. 3 rock fish and 2 kelp bass. My daughter got smoked, she wasn't happy about it. We had a great time and caught some cool looking fish. Planning a trip to Santa Cruz next month for another ocean fishing adventure. I'll keep you posted.

thanks for the great post. please post again when you've fished Santa Cruz. I fished the main pier and also Capitola, but they're very crowded with little action other than sabiki's for bait shiners that can be hooked up and thrown into deep water off end of piers.
the best spot I ever found was off the end of the marina jetty on the Crow's Nest side. It's a bit of an adventure to get there at my age, but once you're settled in you can fish both the back wash of the breaking waves for flounder/halibut or cast out to the deeper water.
there's are two places to get excellent advice on where to go and what to use. there's a fishing store on 41st avenue and another one at the marina parking lot just down from Johnny's Harborside Cafe. (btw a nice place to have a snort and recap the day)(as is Crow's Nest and Aldo's and Oswald downtown [my favorite], Olita's on the SC wharf, Michael's on Main in Soquel, Zelda's in Capitola, Brady's Yacht Club in Seabright [classic dive bar], for breakfast there's Zachary's downtown SC, Silver Spur in Soquel. many other good local eateries.

If you want to take about a 20 minute drive east/south on Hwy1 to Moss Landing, you can have great mexican food at The Whole Enchilada at the turn into the marina. also great surf fishing in nearby Manresa Beach, as well as numerous other spots along the way, including at the jetty by the marina.

Get him a three piece 15’ rod, and an open face reel big enough to cast 25 lb. line at least 150 feet.

I was talking to a guy in the line at the store. The conversation got around to wives, and he said he had been widowed three times. I said ”Three wives, all dead and buried?” He said ”Yes.”

“What happened to the first one?“ “Poison Mushrooms.“ “What happened to the second one?“ “Poison Mushrooms.“ “And the third?“ “Fractured skull.“ “How did that happen?“ “She wouldn’t eat the poison mushrooms.“

A man goes to Victoria Secret to buy his wife the sheerest lingerie he can find. The woman behind the counter goes and gets an outfit.

“This is $200,” she says.
“I want one that’s sheerer,” says he.
“This one is $350.”
“I want it even sheerer than that.”
“This one is the sheerest that we have. It’s $500.”
“I’ll take it!”

The man goes home to his wife and shows it to her saying, “Go put this on and come down to model it for me.”

His wife goes upstairs, opens the box and thinks, “This thing is so see-through that the old coot won’t even notice if I’m wearing it or not. I can take this back for a refund and he won’t know the difference.”

So his wife comes out wearing nothing at all and strikes a pose at the top of the stairs.

“So, how do you like it?” she asks.

Her husband then complains, “Darn, you’d think for $500 they’d iron the dang thing!”

going to As soon. we're very close to the Lower Salt River. Baits and tactics please. Thanks in advance for the help.

If they're open, there are several paved entry roads to fishing spots all along the river from the Blue Point bridge downstream. Phon D. Sutton is a good one and easy to access. where the verde flows into the Salt is also a good spot. fishing close to the bridge in the riffles is excellent, but it can be tricky if there are tubers. in the winter that's not an issue as much as when it warms up.

The best spot I've ever fished is about a quarter mile upstream from the paved parking lot north of the bridge. take the trail upstream that parallels the river, up to the farthest point you can access the water. there's an island in the middle of the stream that creates a sluice by the east bank. if nothing hits there, you can work your way downstream along several trails that take you all the way to the water.

All along the river you can throw small shiny z-rays, corn, worms, power bait, etc. Cast upstream and let them bump their way along the bottom. I imagine fly fishing would also be good in this area, but haven't tried it.

FYI-there is actually a little hotel on the river in that area. Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch. you might be able to fish a good spot if you're staying there.
also-there are a few fishing docks down the road from the boat launch point on Saguaro Lake. not sure how the fishing is now, but years ago bagged both trout and bass from them. take a lawn chair.

I fished Poway one time I think. I used to take my kids to Miramar lake for trout. I knew nothing of Powerbait, not sure it was even around then, but we used Kraft mini marshmallows with either a kernel of corn or a red salmon egg. Those still work. Well, at least until this year.

your post brought back some vivid memories from a couple decades ago. my father-in-law took me fishing on the White River near Heber Springs Arkansas. it started to rain pretty hard, so we docked the boat and fished from under a tin roof that covered the boat dock. the sound of the pounding rain pinging on the tin roof is something I will always remember, as well as the "salmon egg sundae" hook up we used. it was a treble hook with a mini marshmallow, a kernel of corn, and a salmon egg. knocked them out with that combo. delicious filets followed.

I just bought a three piece 15ft rod specifically so I could fish Manresa this coming summer. Was there last summer and at my age (72) not able to handle walking out into the surf with an 8 foot pole to get over the waves. My goal is to bring home a nice fat striper to cook.
