Headed to Morro Bay Saturday morning with my daughter and her boyfriend to do some beach and pier fishing. We got to Morro rock about 9:30 am. The weather was perfect!! Blue sky, no fog, a little windy. The tide was up and the surf was really high making it pretty much impossible, or at least not very fun to fish off the beach so we headed to the south side of the rock to fish in the harbor.

We were using cut baits, shad, squid, shrimp on a slip sinker rig, drop shot, carolina rig, a little bit of everything.

I caught a nice little kelp bass with in the first hour so we got pretty pumped up on that but that was pretty much it until sunset. We watched the sunset from the south jetti then headed back into the harbor to fish. We fished off the rocks until about 7:00pm. I caught another bass and Skyler caught 2 rock fish. A grass and a Copper from what we could tell from the species chart I downloaded.

We got up Sunday and headed to Cambria to check out a beach spot. Moonstone beach I think. Right at the north end of town off hwy 1. That spot is beautiful and would have been good fishing if the surf wasn't so crazy. Caught nothing but kelp.

From there we went to Cayucos to fish the pier. It was windy at the end of the pier and the waves were so high they would mist you when the sets came in. Nice sunny day though. We posted up there for a couple hours. Put a #4 Sabiki rig on my daughter's pole with shrimp pieces. Got a couple bites on that but we weren't able to reel anything in. A bunch of fishermen rolled in about 3:00pm and crowded the pier so we packed up and headed back to our Morro rock spot.

Watched another beautiful sunset and fished the harbor again till about 6:00pm. Skyler caught a Vermilion rock fish(from what we could tell).

All in all the boys reeled in 5. 3 rock fish and 2 kelp bass. My daughter got smoked, she wasn't happy about it. We had a great time and caught some cool looking fish. Planning a trip to Santa Cruz next month for another ocean fishing adventure. I'll keep you posted.

Good Luck down there. Be careful there are King Tides here in Oregon. Super High Tides due to moon being close to Earth.

Some camping is open. Depends on the location. We stayed in a little motel in Morro Bay.

The tide was definitely up and unpredictable. We almost lost our bait bucket.

Thank you for the report and pictures of your family fishing trip. I once lived in California and caught rock cod at pigeon point lighthouse using abalone guts for bait. I hope your next trip is very successful.

Definitely not the week you want to go to the ocean to fish.

It worked out. Not bad inside the harbor.

So other than the fishing, how was the trip? Are restaurants and such open over there? Mrs and I have a reservation for 2nd week or so in February at Grover Beach (Pismo). We're debating wether to cancel? I sure do want to get over there and out of here. Sounds like you know what you're doing - just be safe out there. Never turn your back on the surf. Thanks for the pics!

Yeah restaurants were open for takeout but had tables set up outside. Shops were open for the most part. There was actually a lot of people out and about. The parking lot by the rock was packed by the afternoon. Surfers and fishermen were out.
