Spent the past week trout fishing the Youghiogheny, the Savage, the Casselman, and the North Branch of the Potomac rivers. The rivers were higher than normal and some could not be fished due to high flows. Big Run State Park - and any of the waters above the Savage Reservoir - have some really beautiful water for anyone looking to fish ultralight (2 lb mono) lures for wary trout.
Largemouth and smallmouth bass were caught along with pickeral and one 10 # German brown carp that I tail hooked while fishing a lake.
Favorite spots will always be those that are part of the North Branch of the Potomac watershed in Maryland and West Virginia.

Love that lake! Great place for frogging in the Summer!
Did you catch them on lures?
I think 2# is too light for river fishing. I use UL mostly for panfish and summer trout in skinny, small streams...

I'll be heading out with a bunch of my fishing buddies early next month. I'll post pics when I return. We always fish the Casselman, the Youghiogheny, the Savage, and the North Branch of the Potomac river whenever we go out there. 6 days of sun up- to - sun down trout fishing. Best day on the NB was 5 rainbows all over 20"...

My wife and I prefer to fish with ultra light tackle, as I had mentioned. Everything feels sizable. Hook a Shad or 4lb Rock and it is game on. Now that is living...
I have a 9'6" steelhead spinning rod that's used for long distance casting of spoons and spinners when I fish some of the larger rivers in Western Maryland. I spool it with 6# mono and it works great.
The shad would be a blast with my UL setup and 2#mono! Hang on!

Sure is bigger than the one I caught on Sunday.
Check the Maryland Fishing Report

Richard,
Are you a trout fisherman? If so, Western Maryland has some of the best trout fishing in the USA.

I have the 4x4 permit. To fish there you'll need a MD surf licence($$$) and a saltwater I'd number(free)...
I was test casting the new St Croix 6'8" Victory casting rod in my backyard yesterday. This Winter I got all my crappie, shad, trout, and bass rods and reels ready to roll. Permits for DE and Assateague Island National Park OSV in place too. Jonboat ready for the water. Let's fish!
Has anyone caught any crappies or pickeral yet?
