Any reports of shad being caught below the dam?
Thanks
Unfortunately, that big snow in New York may make the river a bit nasty as the snow melts off. If you go out in a boat, respect the river. It is what you can't see is what can hurt you or your boat the worse. Always only anchor off the front of your boat and play out plenty of extra rope. Hey, never cast up river, unless you want to plant your darts and spinners.
I have been going on the river since the 1960's. Learned a lot. Seen plenty, too.
By far my favorite place to fish. Extremely rare to be skunked.
I love to use ultra light tackle there in the spring. Fun on the perch and wild with the herring and shad.
I caught 1ystrdy walleye fishing

I did see that. That get the blood flowing. Shad and Herring are a blast. Buck Hickory Shad tend to give some great air time. American (what we use to call "White Shad" really give you a great scrap. You set the hook and the rod instantly doubles over and often give that drag quite a zing.
My wife and I prefer to fish with ultra light tackle, as I had mentioned. Everything feels sizable. Hook a Shad or 4lb Rock and it is game on. Now that is living.
Catch white perch by the hundreds is quite a good time, as well. We only keep a few Jumbo White Perch, if we get into them. Some years back my wife caught one that looked like freak it so big. She cooked it over the campfire. It was good. But we fell a bit short of finishing it. It would be nice to repeat that performance.
Great fishing is just around the corner!

I have a 9'6" steelhead spinning rod that's used for long distance casting of spoons and spinners when I fish some of the larger rivers in Western Maryland. I spool it with 6# mono and it works great.
The shad would be a blast with my UL setup and 2#mono! Hang on!

2lb.test..., WOW! In that current and the way those shad fight. That should be something else. Let us know how that goes. I use 4lb
test and that makes for a great interesting experience.
Have a great time!

If you get a white shad there you can probably kiss it Good by
I think 2# is too light for river fishing. I use UL mostly for panfish and summer trout in skinny, small streams...
I'll use a 6X tippet on my 6wt fly rod for hickory shad in Deer Creek. I've used a 4wt also, but I've never seen a white shad in the creek.if I fish the river itself, I use my light 6 footer with an inline spinner with 10# braid.
Yesterday April 6....killing it at the mouth of the Octarara creek
Glad t hey came in. Any word from Deer Creek?
