I've researched this subject seriously. The state biologist says a big Oklahoma shovelnose sturgeon is about 2 ft long. They are the smallest member of the sturgeon family & he says they inhabit both the Arkansas & Red River. I live about 20 miles from the Arkansas & have spent a lot of time snagging & fishing it's waters but have never seen the little beast. Wish you could join me for dinner tonight. Frog legs, catfish, coleslaw, fresh Morrell mushrooms & plenty of sweet tea. Tight lines.

Hello DC. I fished Sardis a couple years ago in my 10 ft inflatable pontoon. Had a great time & caught plenty of fish. Bluegill & some nice sized Largemouth. My favorite areas were the north end & west side. Jigging with soft plastics was always effective for me. Good luck.

Hey BC. We have a lot of Sturgeon fishin out here on our rivers and bays. The water is always kinda muddy to VERY muddy.
3 feet of visibility is GOOD, 2 feet is pretty good, 1 foot is fair 6 inches sometimes is the norm and lately we've only had a couple of inches. And still lots of Sturgeon caught.
I don't really care to fish for them. It's way to slow fishin for me and since I don't eat them it is a waste of time to catch and land one for me. I'd MUCH rather fish for Stripers. That's JMO though.

Hello Saw. All the TV shows & magazine articles I've been exposed to show Sturgeon in beautiful clear water that's very cold. I think they are a very interesting species but I don't think I would deliberately try to catch one. Below Dennison Dam (lake Texhoma) the normal flow of water is low. That's the Red River. The water is warm & muddy with an occasional deeper bend or hole. The river is flowing through sand & one must be careful of quicksand. The striper fishing below the dam is excellent when water is released & catfish are plentiful there also. The full moon next month is the beginning of my favorite fishing, bluegill. Tight lines.

Hello 1313. I was telling a friend about the photo & he informed me that he caught a 24 inch sturgeon in the Arkansas River near Tulsa several years ago. It was foul hooked, not legally caught & was turned loose. No photo. I will be man enough to eat the hind legs off a frog, maybe tonight. I've fished below Dennison dam & compared to the clear cold water sturgeon actually live in I just couldn't imagine one surviving in that warm muddy water. Tight lines.

Caught down river from the Dam

Hello 1313. That's quite a photo. I can be wrong & if so will eat a frog but I call foul on this photo. Dennison Dam & it's tailrace waters are at least 1000 miles from where a sturgeon could live.

Do you ever add scent oils or fish pheromones to the lures?

If I'm trying for crappie with any bait I will add a Berkley crappie nibble, sometimes a couple. I haven't put scent on a LMB or SMB lure in years. I do prefer Berkley soft plastics with scent as the fish seem to hold onto the bait better. I also like the soft plastics from Yum. The Yum dinger fished wacky is my favorite. Tight lines.

I'm wondering how many folks are still fishing with Mepps, Panther Martins etc. Mepps have been good to me over the years. I like sizes 2 and 3 Mepps in chrome. Black Fury in the same sizes have been great as well. I'm fishing them for bass and crappie, along with my jigs and soft plastic baits. What's everyone say about inline spinners?

The white bass (sand bass) are on their spawning run right now in our neck of the woods & I've never found anything better than a white Roostertail. They will also catch crappie which are just short of their spawn. Other baits & lures will catch fish too but in line spinners rule.

Looking for all things striper!

Welcome to the stage my Poorest! You might consider narrowing down your location. Oklahoma is a fairly big place. Texhoma is full of stripers as are several lakes in our state but you'll find more hybrids which are just as much fun to catch. The Arkansas River has some good stripers in its waters & right now tailrace fishing below the lock & dams is excellent. Lake Ft Gibson isn't on the Arkansas but water from the dam flows into the Arkansas just a few miles below & the striper & hybrid fishing is good right now. Good luck.

Where are the crappie congregating this time of year?

Hello Chaplain. Folks are catching good numbers of crappie fishing mornings below Fort Gibson dam. Jigs are the preferred bait. The bite will last until the proper lake level is reached & the gates are lowered.

Welcome to the forum Oldman. I can only dream of the days when I was only 62. Since I turned 63 I have aquired hearing aids & glasses. I have had a knee replacement, 2 prostate surgeries & plastic lens put in both eyes. I don't let it get me down. I still hunt & fish a lot. I've never smoked or been a drinker so I'm in pretty good health for an old geezer. You're living in a fishing rich area plus great numbers of deer, turkey & other game. I hope you are able to get out & enjoy the outdoors. Tight lines.

Hello D. Welcome to the forum. Just passed through Cookson a few minutes ago. Was on my way home from going down to Spiro & checking out that small lake. I've heard it was excellent bluegill fishing. I didn't fish today, only scouted around. I did fish Tenkiller Saturday & had little success. Not unusual after a 2 day rain like we had Thursday & Friday. 3 of us in the boat & most all our fish were caught on spinnerbaits. Multicolor, bright multicolor. Schools of shad were everywhere. I tried a shad color crankbait but never connected. We caught no smallmouth Saturday but we had good luck earlier in the week with spinnerbaits. When it warms up my go to bait is a wacky worm. Rattletraps have been good & if you're after sandbass an Alabama rig is good. I usually launch my boat at Sizemore landing or Pettit bay. My favorite catfish areas are on the north end near Cookson landing. Good luck & tight lines.

Hello fellow anglers. My name is Rusty. I live in Norman, OK. Me and my 8 yr old son love to fish! We've been shore fisherman for the entirety of since I've started 30 years ago. I recently bought my first Bass boat and have had it out th Lake Thunderbird only 3 times so far. We are avid Largemouth fisherman and are trying to find out if there is an area that any of you know about where to hook up with some nice Largemouth?

Welcome Diamond. I've been down highway 9 & drove past Lake Thunderbird dozens of times but I've never wet a hook there. I've heard good things about the lake but I can't help you but there are forum members from the OKC area that hopefully can lend a hand.
Good luck with your boat & catch a record. I plan on severely pestering the crappie in Lake Tenkiller Saturday & possibly some smallies. Tight lines.

There are a variety of rods that are suitable for freshwater fishing, such as Bass X, Berkeley Mudcat, Shimano Solara, Okuma Freshwater, and Bass Fishing Rod. Depending on the type of freshwater fishing you are doing, you may need to choose a rod that is specifically designed for that type of fishing, such as a trout rod or a spinning rod.

I don't really understand your post. Something is missing. I bought 3 new rods yesterday, 2 casting & 1 spinning. I'm sure they were designed for freshwater fishing. Good luck.
