Friends,

I understand that scent plays a big part in fishing for catfish. What about panfish...crappie...bluegill?

Are the "store bought" sprays effective?

My dad used to say that lures were made to catch fishermen, not fish. I wonder if the same applies to the sprays?

I'm looking forward to hearing from you wise folks.

Beautiful but slightly windy day in NE Texas.

I always use scents for Salmon. Anise mostly, it covers the human scent from handling the lures. Also gives the people fishing with it (My kids) more confidence so they fish harder. Crappie I seldom use scents, but I use mostly live bait (Minnows) for that species. I use scents for Bass in the late fall and early spring when the presentation needs to be slowed down because of water temps.

They make pretty good Chicken feed, along with Freshwater Drum. Fillet 'em boil the fillets an use the rest of the fish for fertilizer.

After Moses Fish had dismissed the 12 spies, he and Aaron reviewed what they had told the 12, but both concluded it was insufficient for an all around way for the fish to avoid being caught by on or another of the land beings nefarious tricks and devices.

Aaron Fish offered the observation that he had seen many of the land creatures were simply lazy, they would come out around 8 or 9 in the morning and fish casually for a hour or so, and decide there were no fish there, or they were not biting and leave. So, none of the twelve tribes of fishes had to worry much about them. But Moses, said “Well, maybe so, but there are others of those land beings who are the 25% who catch 75% of our friends and relatives.” We must warn everyone to beware of these more experienced and deadly land beings.

Aaron then said, let us make a list of what our folks need to do to avoid being caught. A list of the following:

1. Never wait and get so hungry and be tempted to gobble down anything.
2. Remain hidden in deep water and ignore anything fluttering or splashing on top.
3. Perhaps have all junior fish go in a school with a senior experienced leader and that way follow his advice about what is real and what is fake.
4. Follow the rule that if it looks too good to be real, it probably isn’t.
5. Be extra cautious around daylight and dusk when you see a delectable item on the surface and there is a boat nearby.
6. Practice good manners and allow another go first.
7. Watch for a school of minnows, try to detect if it is real or a Ned Rig.
8. When you hear a trolling motor get the lockjaw.
9. Turn and run away from any shining or flashy thing swimming by.
10. Be extra patient about selecting your food and you will live longer.
11. Make friends with another slow-witted pal, or a carp, and let him go first.
12. Anything you have any doubts about, avoid.
13. Feed after midnight and live long and prosper.
14. If you see something that looks real, see if it will eat something.
15. If you detect a long weed, vine, or anything appears attached to the food, avoid it.
16. If something swims by repeatedly, disappears, and then swims by again, avoid it.
17. If you mouth something, do it carefully, and if it seems strange, spit it out quickly.
18. If a raw, bloody piece of flesh suddenly appears, it wasn’t an accident.
19. If a small minnow is trying to escape but cannot, avoid it.
20. Crawfish are brave but they aren’t stupid. If it moves to fast or too slow, avoid.
21. Finally, it is better to miss a meal, than to be the meal!

Sure would like to fish with you some day. Wouldn't even mind if I caught no fish, cause your stories would keep me entertained the entire time.

Make sure it's not too large. The bigger ones get mushy meat. And by large I mean like 3+ pounds. Keep the fish on ice or as cold as possible until ready to cook. It will keep the meat firmer. I love lemon pepper and cayenne seasoned filets seared skin side down in butter.

Try smoking the larger Bass the same way you would Salmon. It'll surprise you how good that is.

...how to correct this?

Line was put on the reel with to much tension. Take it off as suggested elsewhere, and re-spool it. Watch for build up at spool face and if it starts to do that lessen the tension on what ever the line is coming off. the line should be even front to back.

Sometimes when i start my 15 horse 4 stroke engine the oil lite will stay on and the engine runs ruff. If i shut it down ,and tilt the motor up ,then put it back down into the water and restart it everything is good. Does anyone have any idea's what the problem my be?

Don't know much about 4 stroke motors. But is there a way to check oil level like a dipstick on a car engine? if so, that's where I'd start my trouble shooting.

In the past, I’ve typically bought my tackle from Tackle Warehouse that had one of the best collection of tackle options. But right now, they are really pissing me off - I’m still waiting for some backorders from an April orders and twice they’ve told me that it would ship & it didn’t.
If I found another place that offered the same broad tackle options, I would leave TW in a heartbeat 😡

Try FishUSA, see if they have what you're looking for. I've dealt with them and will do so again.

Makes sense for night fishing when you don't want to use a light, if the species you're after is light sensitive.

Have yet to identify the lure. Granddad was fond of Creek Chub and South Bend. Why the hooks were cut?
No clue. I doubt if he did that, most likely how it was originally sold.

The way they are cut looks like it was done in an attempt to make it weedless. I'v done that myself a few times.

Monster Tackle USA. These guys are great with customer service, and pricing. Their shipping is fast. Them being on the West Coast, I figured a week to get the order. Had it in 2 days, and shipping was free. One Item was not as shown on web site. I offered to send it back, but they told me to keep it and took the charge for it off my card. They were out of an item I ordered so the sent me a more expensive item that was the same thing at no charge. I'll work with these people any day of the week!

Same here in Michigan. My son when he was maybe 6 hooked one that went about 7lb, when we were Pike fishing, got it up to the side of the boat, took one look at that ugly "monster" and quickly handed the rod to his 8yr old brother who also took one look and promptly threw the rod overboard.

Never figured out how to fix 'em. Oily and boney. Makes good chicken feed if ya boil 'em, and don't plan to eat the chickens. Does not effect egg flavor.
