Hi All,

My wife and I are renting a cabin on the bayside of Alligator Point in late April. We'll have a nice long fishing dock and will bring our kayaks. I'm a freshwater fisherman and have no experience with saltwater angling. I do plan to try for redfish, sheepshead, flounder, or whatever else may be out there. Any suggestions as to what gear I need to bring, what bait or lures to use, and what methods work best would be greatly appreciated.

There are some fair size black drum that hang by bridges and overpasses. Chunks of blue crab on a carolina rig are usually pretty effective. Cast right next to the pilings.

Looking for surf/shore fishing advise in and around Ft Myers. Moved South from Longboat Key where Sand Fleas were plentiful and a common bait. Been raking the beaches here (Ft Myers) for fleas, without much luck. I'm a catch and eat guy. Any advise would be appreciated.

I never had much luck finding sand fleas in the Ft. Myers area. I've had much better success catching live bait with a castnet there. The Sanibel pier has been a pretty good spot for both bait and fishing and I would check out Blind Pass before sunrise. You can also try Sanibel Rocks or Bowmans Beach.

You might investigate some of the older Penn reels like the 704Z. They are not waterproof but their design was so simplistic that they still functioned well even after being dunked and they are easy to service and maintain. They were the surfcasting reel of choice for many years before VS. I would not trust the newer Penn reels as much as the Z series not to mention their servicing has become more and more complex.

O.K. all you fishermen, anglers, and tellers of tall tales, here is a book and even better, a movie about a guy whom his own son cannot believe! I was completely enthralled by this movie and think you will be as well. In fact, I loathe to admit this, but I even see myself at times in this character, played by Albert Finney.

The classic novel that inspired the beloved Tim Burton film and the Broadway musical.

In his prime, Edward Bloom was an extraordinary man. He could outrun anybody. He never missed a day of school. He saved lives and tamed giants. Animals loved him, people loved him, women loved him. He knew more jokes than any man alive. At least that’s what he told his son, William. But now Edward Bloom is dying, and William wants desperately to know the truth about his elusive father—this indefatigable teller of tall tales—before it’s too late.

So, using the few facts he knows, William re-creates Edward’s life in a series of legends and myths, through which he begins to understand his father’s great feats and his great failings.

The result is hilarious and wrenching, tender and outrageous. Now do not blame me if you happen to see yourself as this titled character! Just Sayin…RJS

The book is as good as the movie.

Is it even possible?

I've surf fished many times before and generally only on vacations with the family and either right in front of the house near the closest public access. Success varied wildly and it was always bottom fishing. This year I switched it up by casting in the surf, and actually had some decent, though not always consistent, success (several Spanish, a slot Red Drum, and a PB Bluefish of 5 lbs; got skunked plenty, too). I live not too far from the OBX, making day/weekend trips are not out of the realm of possibility through the year so I'd like to keep practicing (and just finding an excuse to fish since this is the only way I get to do it anymore).

My dilemma is that I love to eat fish and prefer keep my catch (if legal). Most of the fish this year were near where the rest of my family was, and thus a cooler on a beach cart, but I'd love to just take off walking down the beach fishing cuts and generally casting to see what will bite. Most, if not all, people I've seen do this are strictly catch and release, probably due to feasibility of keeping vs. releasing; plus it's good conservation practice.

What I'd like to know is if anyone has found success in storing fish caught on the beach in this way and how you did it?

I've seen some ulua fish packs that are apparently popular in Hawaii for hike-to fishing spots and I've looked into soft-sided backpack coolers but haven't found much that stood out (though Engel's backpack cooler looks somewhat promising). I'm not looking to keep 100+ whiting or anything, but just want to have something on hand in which to stash that occasional slot red, flounder, or speckled trout into for a future fish fry without dragging a 50 qt cooler behind me. Any suggestions/advice are appreciated and thank you in advance!

Not trying to be elitist or anything, and if you enjoy bait fishing I’m glad you enjoy it. I just don’t feel like there’s really much variation to it. Cast your bait out and wait. It works. Experimenting with lures and presentation until you’re having as much success as bait fishing is really satisfying to me.

There is a lot of variation to bait fishing. Which bait do you use? Live or dead? Live lining vs. chunks vs. strips? Best way to rig? Carolina vs. popping cork vs. drop rig. How do you want the bait to move? There is a world of difference in fishing live mullet vs. crabs vs. eels.

You might try catching your own bait. I've learned more about how bait moves and acts just from cast netting and digging for it than I have learned from any lure.

Throw them back. Octopus are extremely intelligent beings. iIf I'm in a restaurant though with char broiled octopus on the menu..yummm Had it on an island in Greece once, right out of the ocean, grilled on the beach. Like squid tho, don't overcook or gets rubbery.

Tossing the below out to get opinions, please? Which spinning reels between the ones listed below would you be your choice for inshore saltwater fishing?

Shimano Saragosa
Penn Slammer
Daiwa BG

To note, I own and my go to is my Stella 5000 mated to 7' St. Croix Legend. I plan to purchase a few extra spinning combos and leaving them in Florida. Wondering if I drop the cash to pay for high-end or if one of ones listed above will be just fine.

Thanks for your time and offering your opinion/feedback.

Fishing surf vs sound can be very different - especially if you have an ORV. This should get you started:

https://www.stripersonline.com/surftalk/topic/708475-an-introduction-to-surf-fishing-the-outer-banks/

Also check the fishing reports from the local tackle shops to get a better idea of current action.

The Red Drum
Frank & Frans
Hatteras Jacks
TWs
Frisco Rod & Gun

How is the fishing in the outer banks in November

Totally weather dependent. Depending on water temperatures there are normally red drum and sharks on the oceanside and some trout on the soundside. You can check the Red Drum, Frank & Frans, and TWs for fishing reports.

Keep in mind that the OBX is a long stretch of east and south facing beaches. What is happening north in Duck will be very different from south in Hatteras so check with the local tackle shops near where you are going.

BTW NC12 is closed right now but may open in a day or so.

Haven't seen many trout this year in the York. Lots of drum a few striper in the creek mouths though.

Fishing grassy canals in Florida. Had a few fish today dive into the pads both times my line broke just after the double uni knot I tied. Is this a case of a bad leader or to low of a lb test? Using 50lb braid to a 12lb red label fluorocarbon.

Try it with a swivel rather than a double uni. If same problem increase leader strength. My flouro leader is usually 5-10# over the braind rating.
