Looking to fish Smith Mountain Lake VA. Any advice for the bigger ones
I was up last week and the fish were not on the beds yet. Once the water warms up they’ll be on the beds in the back of shallow coves then they’ll move to the boat docks. Try around the State Park where there are plenty of lay downs in the water.
My buddy weighs 170 pounds soaking wet and I weigh a slim and trim 250, so even though we fish on my boat he always runs the front trolling motor for weight distribution. That means he gets first dibs on the best casting location. You talk about an advantage. I always use a bait that doesn’t mirror his cause fish have already seen it by the time I get a first cast in. But jeez it’s fun. Just waiting for a little bit warmer temps here in Va.
Sorry Appalachian Power. That looks better
Appellation Electric Power? My guess.
I lived on the lake in the early 70’s when I was going to school there. Never did any ice fishing though. Too cold without a shanty. Fished a little spring and fall and caught some pan fish. Too busy with other things to really get into it. Going back for my 50th soon and I’m taking my gear.
Is that pic taken in Nags Head NC?
I suggest u call and book a striped trip with a guide. He’ll pick you up at ur dock and put you right on the fish. You’ll have a ball. Just google striper fishing SML and make your pic of guides. One trip is great but two trips would be better. Book early.
Thank you Mr. Hansen. Please stay safe.
Again when did u graduate?
Thank you
Can I please ask class were you sir?
Thank you sooo much for your service.
Yup I heard the same thing so my buddies and I took my 14’ alumacraft with front and rear trolling motors to Briery Creek Lake last spring. We thought we would kill em. But fished it ALL DAY and didn’t get a bite. We tried everything we had and nothing. The other problem with the lake is all of the stick-ups. We about ripped the trolling motors off the boat and they were just below the surface and couldn’t see them till u hit em. I’ve heard great things about the lake so we’ll probably go back next spring and try again.
Bass want to fatten up before winter so now has been pretty good. Water temp is right around 60. When it gets below 55 the bite is slower. But yea we catch large blue Gill on small baits and sometimes some perch. I only use live bait when I’m bank fishing but it’s a good way to catch em. Hope this helps.
Swift CreeK Reservoir. I put in at a private boat launch on the northwest side of the lake. I don’t know of any public launches.
Caught her on a neg rig on a private pond near Richmond Va. no scales but she was a good 5-6 pounder.
