Looking to fish Smith Mountain Lake VA. Any advice for the bigger ones
Michael40: This may be unwelcome news, but your best bet is to hire a top guide on the lake of choice. In the long run, if you intend to catch a large Black Bass, you will be money ahead with a guide! Just Sayin...RJS
Yes sir I understand but my tournament schedule take me there this month. Never fished this lake so I'm just gathering info if possible
Well, if you are a pro, then you should be telling me, not vice versa. Go and pre-fish the lake and find em. So later maybe you can catch them again. Just sayin..RJS

I was up last week and the fish were not on the beds yet. Once the water warms up they’ll be on the beds in the back of shallow coves then they’ll move to the boat docks. Try around the State Park where there are plenty of lay downs in the water.
Most of the largemouth fishing is done around the docks after dark. When is your tourney? Day or night? Also which boat ramp will you be using? I am currently sitting on the deck looking out over SML. I haven't seen many fishing boats here in the Little Bull Run area. The ones that do put in at the penhook ramp take off towards the main lake. The alewives are in the shallows after dark but are very small for the most part(2.5in.) No sights or sounds of the largemouth feeding around the docks after dark yet. Probably a little to early still. The next full moon should change that. Good luck.

This time of year the fishing changes daily. Moon phase, water temp, water depth.
You have that right, if it was always the same it would be boring. Just Sayin...RJS
