Just realizing how very lucky and fortunate I am having caught everything on my list multiple times now. I listed everything here and then deleted it as not wanting to appear to be bragging. Listing everything made me realize I need a 50 plus pound Black Grouper.
Freshwater………..CHECKED OFF
Saltwater…………..Pretty Much Checked
Wishing everyone LUCK catching that big one!! Best advice, choose the correct body of water for the big fish you want to catch.
Try a BOWLINE. You didn’t say wher or what you are fishing for. I use this bottom fishing on the gulf with everything from 20 to 90 pound mono. For really big fish 200 pounds plus I add a crimp.
Hope will not stop the over development in FL
No it is not but that’s already been covered here.
Look at the app FISH RULES to help you ID saltwater fish.
I live on the Gulf and plenty of Tarpon here this time of year but never see carp. Until you have caught a Tarpon you really just may not get it. I have fished carp in WI as a child with my grandfather. Was always fun but in no way compares to a Tarpon no matter what the size of either fish. Could write pages on Tarpon fishing. A sentence covers carp as my grandfather taught me. For carp he would say “you need your rod, reel, sinkers, hooks and some chicken liver for bait”. He was right! Have caught over 100 Tarpon and every one still gets me excited.
I love the BG REELS. I use 5000 and 8000. I think 5000 is to small for surf fishing but that’s me.
Make your own single strand leaders for jigs. Wire size based on jig. I use pretty light wire. Haywire twist and small swivel. I make up 15/20 at a time. Store them in a straw in my tackle box and add a jig or whatever as needed.
I fish almost exclusively off shore in the Gulf. Currently fishing Tarpon near shore. For a whole list of reasons that don’t really matter I am almost always using a swivel. I don’t want to talk about how or why or when but want to try and help you with the problem of attaching the swivel or other lure to your line. No matter if fishing with one of the many jig styles I make or just attaching a hook, I discovered I only need to know one knot and it is ultra easy to tie and I have landed everything that swims in the gulf on a hook tied with this knot. Last week brought up a 200# plus Goliath Grouper on a 5 oz jig tied to my leader with this knot from 129 feet. It is especially good for fishing a jig as it creates a loop which allows the jig a better movement, at least I think so. Anyway try using a Bowline Knot. When tied correctly it will never slip under the load of the biggest fish and like I said easy to tie under all conditions. GOOD LUCK!

YEP.....
Ladyfish.....
Poor mans Tarpon
My buddy’s laugh right up to the time i out jig them. An old timer taught me when I was a kid (67 now) the best knot for jig fishing is the Bow Line Knot. I use it on 5/8 to 16 oz jigs. Also use it for making rigs for big fish. Sharks, Tarpon, Kings, Cobia, etc.. I primarily fish jigs.

99.9 pure soft lead
I pour hundreds of 3/5/6/8 oz jigs each year and this cost more but it is clean pure lead and a huge time saver.
Depends on what you are fishing for as already stated. Check out the Daiwa BG series of reels. Hang it on an Ugly Stick. Great reels and sturdy rods.
