I don't know if would work on a wolffish, but when we used to catch pike we would grab them with a thumb in one eye and the middle finger in the other. It paralyzes them and they don't flop and twitch or bite. Doesn't seem to hurt them either. Damn, fish are tough. Can you imagine if something treated you like that?

It will probably kill them. Definitely will blind them...take better care of fish unless you intent to keep them.

I'll be 78 next month and have been fishing most of those years. During that time, I have accumulated a tacklebox-full of fishing lures, many of which go unused. One major reason that I don't use them is that I hesitate to throw a treble hook laden lure into heavy cover for fear of losing it. It finally dawned on me that those lures aren't doing me any good sitting in my tackle box, so this year I have resolved to throw those lures where the fish are and not to worry if I hang them up. If I'm lucky, I'll latch onto a lunker that I otherwise wouldn't have. If not, I've only lost a lure that I wouldn't use anyway. Besides, If I lose them all I can go shopping for more.

For some lures, you can swap out the trebles for single hooks. I do this all the time on my musky baits (I use single siwash hooks). For musky and northern, I get a better hook up ratio by a wide margin, so you are not likely to lose fish this way. It is also easier to take out the hooks. Lastly, the singles go through cover way better. It's win-win-win! Try it.

We call burbot, eelpout, in MN. and we have an International Eelpout Festival around the middle of Feb. in Walker, MN. It is a big deal (drunk) and it will bring a ton of money into the small town of Walker and the surrounding area. Sections of Leech Lake, a very big lake, will be just covered with people with hardly a place to stand in order to fish. Big money prizes and a good time is had by all.

Just so you know, the eelpout festival for 2020 has been cancelled.

Robert J, a Burbot is a cross between an eel and a fish I think. Lol. Let me figure out how to load a picture here ok.

A burbot is not a cross between two species. It is its own species.

I have boca bearings in quite a few reels. When you say improvement, what do you mean? Casting distance, reel smoothness, casting ease, or noise? Improvement is relative to your goals.

I never measured the difference in casting distance so I don't know about that. The bearings did make casting easier, so for the same distance I am not throwing as hard. The bearings are extremely smooth, but also very noisy.

Trouble is, I also added bearings to my level winds, idler gears and spool gear that drives the level wind, so it is hard to say where all of the improvement came from. I will say my reels are effortless and silky smooth.

Just curious...you say 'down here' but we have no idea where 'here' is.

Great collection of baitcasters. They last forever if you care for them. I have an army of these as well, some very old, all supertuned. They get heavy duty use in Minnesota and Canada!

I have written permission from my brother-in-law to hunt or fish on his property. Here in Mississippi if you don’t have it the game warden can arrest you for trespassing and hunting or fishing on property that is not yours. I sold some property and was given permission to remove some things that belonged to me from the place. I gave a friend of mine written permission to go onto the property to get some things for one day. The new owner saw him and called the law. He got off since he had the permission slip. Still had to call me to prove I had given it to him. I guess it is good for this except today your word of mouth ain’t worth anything any more. Even if you have written permission you still have to prove it.

I have five acres of land that is posted because of rude people. Sorry, I don’t need snowmobiles and four wheelers blasting around my home at 50 mph and 110 decibels. Even with the posting there are still people doing this.

I also have dogs who use my property and unless you post your land trappers can legally put body grip traps on your property.

My observation is people have little respect for private property and I applaud enforcement. People should ask permission to enter private property, posted or not!

Other than replacing the drag washers with carbon fiber there's not much more that'll make a big difference in an exceptional reel. I'd first degrease the unit & replace the lube & grease with high quality synthetic lube. I've replaced the factory bearings in some ambassadors with the new ceramic bearings & actually prefer the factory bearings. I think the ceramic are harder to adjust on those reels & can get the spool traveling too fast. That's just my opinion. If you're surf fishing you may want a reel with more line capacity than a 4500. Good luck in your search. Go on you tube for other ideas for slicking up an ambassador. All I can say is the slicker you make it the better your thumb's got to be.

There are all sorts of upgrades you can make to a 4600 reel. You can add ceramic hybrid bearings (which add noise, but increase smoothness), bearings on the cog wheel (some call the idler) and bearings on the cog wheel drive (some call the spool gear). You can also add bearings on both ends of the level wind worm gear. After you do all this, you will have a reel that is pure silk. I have done all of these and love my reels with these upgrades!

I am guessing some of these upgrades are available for the other reels you mentioned as well, but I have direct experience with the 4600s. I love the 4600 style reels, mainly for their light weight and have some that have had heavy use for 30 years. They will last forever if you care for them.

And yes, as the poster I am quoting stated, if you do all these, you better be skilled with a bait casting reel.

You dont need a large battery like most people think for trolling nor do you need to spend big to start. My first deep cycle trolling battery was a VMAX Deep Cycle AGM Battery $279.99 and it is the best are so all reviews say and it laster 3 years. I replaced it with this one from Walmart that only cost $89.00 and it is still going full charge after 4 years and it last over 8 hours while powering a 70lb trust 19 foot Nitro Bass Boat.

The battery is a Every Start 845 MCA

To make those batteries last longer, be sure to do two key things:

1. Recharge the battery with a trickle charger when it is not in use (on the dock and in storage).

2. Remove the battery and store indoors when not in use (especially in cold weather).
By far the best way to keep your battery going as long as possible is to follow the user’s manual! Honestly this seems stupid, but each battery is designed to operate in very specific ways and maintaining them based on their unique needs is an important factor in making that battery last.

3. When storing you battery alway's store and charge your batteries off the ground ether in your boat or on a block of wood off the ground as the cold floor drains your battery life even more.

There are a few inaccuracies here.

1. Storing batteries on concrete used to be an issue. That has been corrected a long time ago. See this link:
https://northeastbattery.com/do-cement-floors-ruin-car-batteries/

2. Storing batteries outside in the cold is probably the best place you can store a battery when not in use. This is because the reaction rate for battery discharge drops by half for every 20 degree drop in temperature. So compared to storing at 60 degrees, storage at 0 degrees will cause the discharge rate to drop by 87%. There is one caveat to this - the battery must be fully charged when you put it into storage. If not, the battery will freeze.

I have been storing my batteries outside for more than 30 years with temperatures down to -40 (without a trickle charger). I have never had a problem with a battery and they come out of storage almost fully charged. My batteries also last six years on average with a lot of use.

Sorry to burst the bubble, but that is not a tiger muskie. Northern Pike = light spots, dark background, tiger muskie = dark markings, light background. Please note the comment on the pike in the picture: "Juvenile pattern has white oblique bars which extend from the white belly". This is exactly what this fish has.

Well, I don't know what to say. My best fishing partner is my wife and I am thrilled when she out fishes me. Somehow, you need to get your hubby to appreciate that he has a wife who loves to fish! This is the best of all and for many men, would be the holy grail of fishing partners.

I hope my wife out fishes me every time we go out!
