I only know because I made the exact same mistake lol

Your water probably has a stocking plan, that's how I got mine. They're a sterile hybrid of northern pike and musky. That there is about a yr old. They'll bust 40" easy when grown.

"Embarrassing" is tossing it in your garden pond because you thought it was an 18" pickerel" lol. Whoops.

My first thought was "that looks more like a musky than a pike". Didn't know about the hybrid. There are no pike in California. Some genius decided it would be a great idea to introduce them into Lake Davis. Go online and check it out. They poisoned the lake and killed all the fish to eradicate the pike. The fear was that they would infiltrate the rivers and wipe out the trout and salmon. The little town of Portola was hit pretty hard economically, because they rely on people showing up there to fish the lake. It was a huge mess.

Guys my grandad was a icefisher in the winter and a musky hunter in summer. He spent his whole life in pursuit of the illusive muskelunge, and I believe he caught one in all that time. Now this was 70 or 80 or even 90 years ago. Have the techniques/gear improved that much since those days? Or was he just a lousy fisherman? Is that why they call em "unicorns"? He fished mostly Wisconsin and Minnesota.
