I can tell you what works for the larger fish for me: A 12’ St. Croix Legend Surf Spinning Rod, the Power is heavy, action is moderate fast, lure weight is 2-8 oz’s. Penn Fierce III 6000 Reel with 20 # mono main line, 3 or 4 oz pyramid sinker, use a plastic slide with a snap on it for the sinker attachment, then a bead and a #1 swivel with 20 # steel leader 18”s long with a 8/0 J-hook. Caught smaller sharks and a 51” Eagle Ray weighing 45 #s and many smaller rays with that combination. Just have your drag set and adjust it while playing the fish, when it’s tired and you have it close to the beach, pull up on your rod and reel repeatedly (repeat) when the waves are breaking, the fish will ride the wave in right to your feet.
Another less costly 12’ rod I use is a Penn Prevail II Surf Spinning Rod, power is heavy, action is moderate fast, lure weight is 4 to 8 oz’s.
Also, for smaller fish I have two 11’ Tsunami Surf Spinning Rods, power is medium, action is fast, lure weight is 1 to 4 oz’s.
Penn Fierce III 6000 Reel is the right size for me, the 8000 was too large and the 4000 too small. I have 10 Penn Fierce III 6000’s on my surf and river (larger fish) rods.
Hope this info helps and tigh lines to you.
