What weight and length is your rod also is it fiberglass or newer material faster action rods don’t load as well as slower rods on the roll cast
Carbon fiber medium fast 9ft 5wt

I am an amature, but I have never found a reason for a 9 foot leader. 7 is my standard go to and 5 for bass and panfish. It is more important to me how and where the fly falls or acts in the water than how much more stealth a nine foot leader is over a seven foot. I read about 60 years back a quote in a sport magazine and live by it. "It's not the fly Mac, it is how you use it"
That’s good to know, I’m going for panfish and bass I don’t fish for trout

What line are you using you can’t roll cast weight forwards very well or sinking lines you need a tapered line and shrink your leader to 5-7 ft till you get the hang of it and start short don’t try to bomb 50 ft out till you can master shorter distances
It’s the line that came on it I believe its weight forward floating

Best advice I can give you that worked for so many of my clients is to cast to 3 feet above the water, or lawn. That will cause the fly and line to drop gently with the fly hitting the water first. I have been fly fishing for over 50 years and still have to remind myself of that tip. Good luck. Please let us know how it goes. As is often repeated, photos are great.
I will try to remember this, thank you

You're off to a good start. You might try a 7 foot leader of the 9 isn't working for you. With a little more experience, the 9 will be easier. There are lots of inexpensive books that will teach you different techniques and patterns
Thank you I will consider a shorter leader if I keep having problems
Any tips from you professionals?
Trying to learn how to cast, working on a roll cast more than an ordinary over head cast, doing ok with the fly line but the 9ft leader + tippet doesn’t straighten out like I think it should, practicing on the grass and I don’t think grass is good to practice on, I’d rather practice on the water
Also trying to learn how to tie,
Here is how I’m doing,
Remember I didn’t try to make them look like anything and I wasn’t trying to copy anything, just trying to tie something that maybe hopefully a fish might bite

What is the difference between mono and flouro?
Fluorocarbon is supposed to be invisible under water and it doesn’t stretch like mono does also in my opinion it’s stiffer than mono, I love fluorocarbon but I will only use it for leaders

Can I use the whopper plopper(or equivalent) with a leader or does the leader drag it down? How boyant are they?
I use a leader all the time, whopper ploppers float

I need to re spool all my spincast reels.
I don't use braid, I use mono or flouro and honestly don't know the difference.
For casting, what lb. test do you like for pike and what do you like for LM bass? Is there a happy medium line for both? I do use a leader all the time to be prepaired for anything that might take my bait. I hope on a fluke a musky takes my lure. One did but only 20".
My wife uses spincast reels and it seems that they perform best with 10lb mono, she has one that can use braid, I tried to put straight fluorocarbon on one once and all it did was break when she casted, just my thoughts

I've have buzz baits and want to buy a whopper plopper for bass & northern pike.
Can I use a swivel and leader with these or should I tie them on directly? If so what lb. test should I use?
If you could buy one whopper plopper what color? In Youtube videos I often see the one that looks like a perch.
Thanks
I use braid and a leader on all my rods, also a swivel and a clip, I have several whopper ploppers in several colors, I mainly use (I forget the color names) a black one and a white one the white one seems to be the best it’s kind of a sexy shad color ( white with blue on top and a little yellow on the sides) in the 75 size I think it is, I can throw it on 8lb line or 30lb line it doesn’t matter

They work well for trolling for stripers with chartreuse minnow trailers. Check your regulations as to the amount of hooks you can use.
From what I understand is as long as you don’t use more than 51 your good

Even on 1/32 oz jigheads for crappie?
Sorry I quote replied the wrong one, I meant for the one who started the post, anyway you got me there, but I don’t use 1/32 jig heads and I’ve only ever caught 2 crappie one good sized and one baitfish sized, I’d like to target them sometimes but I’m not a good crappie guy, if I did use something that size I would probably use a smaller swivel and clip
