Looking for some input - how best to tie on a crank bait or spoon (Kast Master for Now)
All,
I'm stuck in the SoCal drop-shot and Texas riggedd worms for my large mouth hunting mode.
Want to switch it up to crank baits and Kast Masters.
My questions:
1. When do you tie crank baits straight onto the lure, assuming it usually includes a split ring.
2. When, if ever, do you include a snap (no swivel, simple snap) for easy quick changes?
3. If you add a snap, when do you add a swivel?
Any guidance appreciated.
However productive, I'm just sick of my plastic presentations.
Thanks,
Stephen
I like snap swivels period. no one has proved to me that they are a lure detriment in "most" cases.
I tie directly to a crank bait with an improved cinch knot. For jerk baits and swim baits I use a loop knot to give the lure a more natural presentation. No snaps for me. Had a guide tell me once that losing a nice fish to a failed snap can be the difference between a $5 tip and a $50 tip. Swivels have their place, C-rigs and anything that can twist a lot. IMO.
Agree, use a Snap swivel on all Crankbaits, Spoons, or Jig. The only time I tie the line directly to the lure is when I'm Fly Fishing.
On neutral bouyancy baits I tie a loop knot on all other crank baits I tie on a snap. Makes for easier changing baits, for a kast master or any other spoon I tie on a snap swivel. Help eliminate line twist.
1) I only tie directly to the lure if it is a plastic jig/jighead or a small crank for the finicky fish.
2) I use a snap when using spoons or crankbaits for quick changes, when trying out different colors and sizes (especially the deep diving ones), especially when trout fishing.
3) I use a snap swivel on any lure that will spin or twist in the water, to prevent line twist.

I use swivels and clips for everything

Even on 1/32 oz jigheads for crappie?

Sorry I quote replied the wrong one, I meant for the one who started the post, anyway you got me there, but I don’t use 1/32 jig heads and I’ve only ever caught 2 crappie one good sized and one baitfish sized, I’d like to target them sometimes but I’m not a good crappie guy, if I did use something that size I would probably use a smaller swivel and clip
