I've have buzz baits and want to buy a whopper plopper for bass & northern pike.

Can I use a swivel and leader with these or should I tie them on directly? If so what lb. test should I use?

If you could buy one whopper plopper what color? In Youtube videos I often see the one that looks like a perch.

Thanks

Monkey Butt or Loon for me. You don’t need a leader for bass but you may want to for the pike. I tie 12 or 14 pound mono or flouro directly to the eye of the lure. It is a straight pull lure and therefore does not need any freedom of movement like a jerk bait or a fluke.

Just bought 2 about 3 months ago. 1-black and 1-monkey butt. Haven't tried them yet. Good luck

I have two Choppos by Berkeley. I have the Maverick and the Perfect Ghost. Both are 90 size weighing in at 1/2 ounce. They were about $4 cheaper than the Whopper Plopper and both catch fish. I use the the dark color in low light and darker days. Light color on bright days, but I have switched up at times with success.

I use braid and a leader on all my rods, also a swivel and a clip, I have several whopper ploppers in several colors, I mainly use (I forget the color names) a black one and a white one the white one seems to be the best it’s kind of a sexy shad color ( white with blue on top and a little yellow on the sides) in the 75 size I think it is, I can throw it on 8lb line or 30lb line it doesn’t matter

If you’re only going to buy one, go with black, or loon color as the fish will see the silhouette during gray skies and low light conditions better. Good luck with it as they are a lot of fun!

Only thing I can add is that, when fishing pike, I always used a steel leader. Can be a thin one but those pike are aggressive buggers and will bite anything else.

Good luck.

Can I use the whopper plopper(or equivalent) with a leader or does the leader drag it down? How boyant are they?

I have used whopper plopper lures since I learned about them years back . I have always used 30- 40 braid tied to a small swivel attached to the plopper . Do not bother yourself with the concern that the fish “ will see” the braid. They don’t really care. 30-40 braid is small diameter anyway. The main line - to leader - to plopper thing is just an un- necessary step than can increase chances of a knot failure. The braid floats , and even while you shouldnt do a he- man hookset when you get bit ( just a waist high rod sweep will do ) the braid will not stretch enough to cause you to miss the fish. I use the small swivel because the cigar - shape of the bait ( 110-130 - 190 size) will allow for some roll of the bait . The small swivel usually takes care of that issue .But I usually don’t try to burn a plopper across the water because the faster you reel , the better chance of a roll over .A medium retrieve is the best . I’m not familiar with the action of the smaller versions . As for color, there are many great fisherman - catching colors ($$$) available for this lure, as many as you could imagine.. But a great universal color that gets bit everywhere is bone. See, most bass don’t see color on top of the lure, they mainly see the underside . Hope you find this helpful .
