Good replies here. I have used both types of vices and only prefer the base type because it’s easier to move around when I need the table for something else. As to kits, my experience is that there isn’t anything really useful in any of them EXCEPT to learn with. Once you get the hang of it you’ll want just the right shade of yarn, the right hackle size and better quality tools.

Yeah, I kinda miss the fishin’ here too. But, really, it’s cold and rainy right now anyway! I fished in that years ago because I worked M-F and fished when I could. Semi-retired now and realizing I don’t have to fish in the rain any more. And extra days at the end of the season? There is fishing open (normally) year round. May not be my favorite species but if I really wanted to there’s always fishin’ out there.

Actually fishing is closed until 5pm April 8th (not the 6th). But much of the rest of this conversation is correct. The fish and wildlife commission is clearly on the side of the commercials and not the recreational sportsman. Wonder what the allure is...probably cash. Sure wish we could keep politics out of this forum though. That’s not what I am looking for here. I hear enough of that at work.

I believe Lost Creek is a Sportsman’s Warehouse brand; they carry a large volume of their stuff anyway. I know Lost Creek also makes reels and, while not “top of the line” they’re not high priced either. Depending what kind of fishing he’s doing the reel just stores the line when it’s not in the water anyway.
As for fly tying stuff, just get him a good quality vice and maybe some bobbins or hackle pliers but not a bunch of materials. It’s best that he gets what he needs for tje kind flies he ties. Those kits usually load up a bunch of cheap crap that isn’t really useful. He’s no beginner so he doesn’t need crap to practice on.
That will be 2 cents please....

If it’s for fishing predominantly then I say the multi tool is the best choice. But camping and whittling...there’s just something really cool about a Swiss Army knife. Whatever he ends up with just emphasize the importance of keeping it sharp. Dull knives are dangerous!

Back at the beginning of your first post you mentioned catch and release. Be aware that fish tend to swallow bait (like powerbait and worms) making it difficult to release fish in a condition that they can survive. Artificial lures on the other hand tend to hook in the mouth making it easier to release them with nothing more than a sore lip.

It’s not unusual for places selling alcohol to blanket check EVERYONE. Especially if they have had problems selling to minors. It’s just easier to explain to the customer “we’re not picking on you, we check everybody”. It also helps ease concerns from the inspectors which, in turn, makes life less stressful for the owner.

Thinking about heading to the Tilton later today. Friend of mine was up ther last Saturday and did well; sent me a photo showing 5 fish on the grass. 2 adults and 3 jacks.

Hello Lappahoe...I'm in Puyallup and have fished many places in the state. Been out of the loop for a few years but I'm semi-retired now and hope to get out more often.

Ling cod are a strickly salt water fish (and my personal favorite). The burbot is sometimes referred to as freshwater ling but I think that is more because of appearances than anything else. They are also sometimes called poor mans lobster because their flavor is similar to American lobster.
