WiBob, you give good advice with your opening statement. Unfortunately you then follow that up with the exact same act of spreading information that fits your personal position without offering verifiable facts such as the date, author, and publication from which you grabbed your “quote”.
You mention NASA as the source. Did NASA sponsor this research, or are they citing some other source? Digging deeper into The Who, what and where details of statistics is important to making an informed, personal decision. You don’t cite any details other than NASA. Yours, and the post you responded to, are an example of the type of post that we must all beware of. Yours is more concerning because you use a known organization who people are likely to trust as the source. But, are they? If you cite statistics on line it is the responsibility of the author to dig deep and cite the source. An example would be: “According to a 2020 study conducted by the XX University Department of Environmental Studies, and published in a August 2021 NASA document xxxx, found that….”
To be clear, I’m not insinuating that you are trying to spread misinformation. I’m pointing out that without the source cited, that will allow me to verify them for myself I am skeptical.
So, I encourage all of my fellow Stagers to be wary of such “statistics”. There are good, statistically sound reports on our environment out there that you can examine for yourself. But, keep in mind that statistics are easily manipulated. In my opinion the source of the funding for such statistics are the key as to whether I bother to consider them or not.
Brothers and Sisters, you have proven to me that you are intelligent people. If an issue is important to you, approach the fact with intelligence and form your own opinion.
OK, stepping down from my soapbox now.😀

Point taken, Maniac. I probably wasn't as emphatic as I should have been with the "quick search" reference. My point wasn't to encompass the totality of climate research, it was just to say that the reported and reviewable data paid for by your tax dollars is pretty easily accessible. In this case it was one of the first links to pop up:

https://sealevel.nasa.gov/faq/13/how-long-have-sea-levels-been-rising-how-does-recent-sea-level-rise-compare-to-that-over-the-previous/

But NOAA/Dept of Commerce more or less agrees with NASA:

https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/sealevel.html

I will admit that I spent very little time looking into this - just saw the post and thought it didn't look right. I take exception to the "here's a statistic I made up, so you're an idiot" approach that seems to be getting more common these days. I will mildly object to your statement "exact same act of spreading information that fits your personal position" though. Data shouldn't be subjective (or fabricated). And for the record, I'm far from an irrational tree-hugger (don't own a solar panel, windmill, or electric car)! I strongly agree with the last few lines of your post, and here's a possible place to start for those that want to consider how tough it might be to interpret the available data.

Anyway, I'm dropping out of this now. What a way to drag down a fishing forum!

Always good to look at things with a critical eye and consider the source, but too many of us will just read your post and start spreading it as fact. A quick search will turn up multiple sources of scientific data, all saying pretty much the same thing as NASA:

"From about 3,000 years ago to about 100 years ago, sea levels naturally rose and declined slightly, with little change in the overall trend. Over the past 100 years, global temperatures have risen about 1 degree C (1.8 degrees F), with sea level response to that warming totaling about 160 to 210 mm (with about half of that amount occurring since 1993), or about 6 to 8 inches. And the current rate of sea-level rise is unprecedented over the past several millennia."

So not a tenth of a degree in 40 years - more like 2 degrees in 100 years. And not a sixteenth of an inch in 40 years - more like 4 inches in 30 years. It is possible to push back on the doomsayers without trying to pretend that nothing is happening. Like every other issue out there, misrepresentation and hyperbole on both sides of the aisle tends to damage all of us by preventing legitimate discussion and problem-solving.

My first ice fishing trip was a regional Boy Scout event when I was maybe 12 years old. Back then they didn't cancel events, even when the wind chills were 50 below (actual temp ~20 below). I was a poor kid with no experience, hence no equipment. My K-Mart parka and non-insulated boots kept me going for about 3 minutes in that weather. Leaving wasn't an option when I was with a big group of scouts, so I spent most of that miserable day hiding in the back of a van (with the door open - not my van, not my rules) hoping I would somehow make it back home alive.

It was many years before I would try ice fishing again.

About what I said earlier, about too many of us ....

Here's an example of what happens when a population is unchecked. On Angel Island in San Francisco bay, There's a population of deer. Because of numerous animal welfare, animal rights, humane, and other such organizations in and around San Francisco, hunting was disallowed. There are no predators there and the aforementioned organizations opposed the introduction of predators, so the deer population grew until they were starving. The population collapsed, and then recovered and grew again. They tried trapping and relocating deer - at a cost of about $3000 per animal - but the program was a dismal failure. Each cycle of collapse and recovery of the deer population was greater than the one before.

Is this a microcosm of what we can anticipate for our own species?

Here's an official report on the issue, if you don't mind some tedious reading:
https://www.wildlifeprofessional.org/western/transactions/transactions_1982_13.pdf
The cost and failure of the relocation program is here:

The difference, B, is that your example doesn't include any predators. As we produce more and more people, we're also producing more predators.

I was out on about 6 inches of ice on Wednesday. Lots of fish checking out my bait, but not many takers. Hard to tell from the photo, but that was the biggest perch I've ever seen - over 14" and an absolute balloon!

OJ, as always, has the right answer - ice conditions can only be determined locally. I went out on my one-acre pond in the Appleton area about a week ago. Looked like about 5 inches of ice, but the quality wasn't good. My apprehension outweighed the enjoyment when the ice started cracking and groaning wherever I stepped, so I just packed up after maybe 30 minutes.

Funny thing is, I was out on the same pond about a week earlier. Probably a little less ice and I could only get on from one shore due to the variability, but never had any cracking or concerns and fished for hours that day.

I bought the Striker, mainly for ice fishing with the flasher function but also planning on the kayak. Really like it but can't offer any comparison to the Vivid. Garmin is easy to use if you don't want to spend a bunch of time figuring out the unit. For about a hundred bucks on sale (no portable kit), can't really go wrong.
