I’ve heard high praises on the fish catching abilities of these.
I have used them for musky and have had exactly one follow with no commit
Kinda wrote em off for bass. I’m more a stealthy top water guy.
Frogs of course and I love lucky craft gun fish. It’s deadly .
Cut my teeth using a spook. And a pop R is kinda aggressive and had its place.
Never used a lure that caused so much racket
Well I work with a guy and we got to talking bass fishing. He swears by the Berkeley 90 size.
He gave me one still in the pack.
Gonna have to swallow my pride a little and put this noisy dude to the test next season

Any tips on retrieve or any other secret tips anyone would mind sharing with an old fisherman ?

Thanks in advance

Ben I know of one guy that got a nice SM on one. I have whopper n choppo. I found choppo works with less effort than plopper. I missed one on the lily pond on choppo. I like the Berkeley wakebait. The faster you wind the wider the wobble n the louder it gets. Has that one knocker sound. Good luck 👍

I’m skeptical
But Im also the guy who carried a bag or 2 of senkos around for years till I put em to the test and had my mind. Blown!!!!
Have to make myself NOT fish these things. Got to be too much of my go to. So many other presentations that may or may not out perform
Hope this one does the same.

In case anyone is wondering , Gary Yamamoto senkos look like … well nothing you would immediately go to. Trust me , they are absolute fish catching lures
If you don’t use them. You are missing out on something special.

Love Senkos Ben and you’re right, they seem to be nothing special but are fishing machines. Mann’s stingray grubs were another shocker, smallies definitely preferred them over twister types. Can’t find those stingrays any more.

Wacky rig senkos are my down fall also but account for so many fish. The only one I got last week came in a 5" natural shad. Use VMC crossover ring. Dead center top lip 👍 Senkos n bass pros bass teaser tubes are always on the menu

Ben the whopper plopper works really well for me. I find the white one works the best. I’ve used the Berkeley 90 but have had better luck with the whopper plopper 90. You can very the speed of your retrieval but I try using a speed that makes the most noise. Go too slow or fast and it somewhat looses that plopping noise. You can stop and start them on your retrieval but have only caught bass on a steady retrieval. I have missed a few bass off and on which surprises me with 2 treble hooks on them. They can explode on them too.

I’ve caught some of my biggest largemouth Bass using a Whopper Plopper. Googan makes the best Whopper Plopper I’ve ever used or seen along with a Berkeley‘s whopper popper.

If it’s cloudy and overcast throw it in the back 1/3 of coves; especially those with creeks in them. Retrieve it at a steady pace and if you get a blow up, don’t jerk, just keep winding it at the same pace. The majority of the time the fish will come back and eat it.
It was cloudy yesterday and this 2.6 lb spotted bass hit the lure three times before he finally ate it. Had multiple fish in thee 2-3 lb range until the clouds went away.

Thanks in advance

For bass they are killers in the lake. The secret for me is to make sure the retrieve is fast so it make the correct noise. Too slow and it doesn't work well.

The whopper plopper was a “ game changer” bait for bass several years back. Here in Texas, it was instrumental in making local tournament guys a bunch of money. Especially the bone color. Most of the guys used the 130 size at that time. I used it at lake naconiche and had the best topwater bite of my entire life..Now, this lure is very common , there are several different sizes / colors , and made Larry dahlberg ( designer )a millionaire .....To use this bait or the choppo , Just cast it past your target area, and reel it back, pausing it in your theoretical strike zone, then reel it again. Not rocket science . Other companies make variations of this type lure. The PH custom lure “ Ploppin P “ comes to mind. It’s made of wood and the plopping tail is made of aluminum. You can change the angle of the aluminum tail and it changes the sound of this particular lure. And, FYI , you can buy a similar plastic blank from companies like lure parts online , and be creative and make your own versions ....Hope this helps with your decision which lure to purchase....My 2cents

Well Ben, I guess we will have to go to "whopper popper" fishing school. I only have 3 of them including the bone colored one my friend said I had to have. At first, I thought I was really on to something. First cast early am on Fork I snagged a 4 pounder. Never caught another on on it for an hour or so. Tried it several other days in several other locations and different presentation and still lack luster performance.

I am really successful on calm waters with a Pop-R. Yellow Magic works well for me. Little bit of wave action, a spook will still catch. Just my nickel.
