Seems like this should have been easy to google... I keep coming up empty though. Lots of good advice on different knots to use, but not much detail on when to use each knot.

Specifically I've been curious if there is a "best" knot for tying on snaps/swivels. I typically am using barrels for my soft bait and snaps for everything else that I don't directly tie cuz they're the quickest.

Any advice and reasons would be much appreciated.

We usually take two poles..bigger one cast out a hunk of mullet or similar bait and let sit, smaller one gulp and reel in using different retrieve techniques till you get their attention.

I also am bi-poler on piers, but both are long. A 7-10’ flexible pole for Sabiki rigs and small fishes, and a stiffer one 12-15 feet for getting out away from the pier.

Good rule of thumb is to find deepest water next to shallows and look for shoreline structure that leads into the lake (road, tree line, hump, etc)). Other than that find the underwater channels and troll a suspended surface lure (rapala fat raps are great) near the edge of the channel.

agree regarding fat raps. the best all-around crank or trolling.

Are 4-5 piece rods good for pier fishing? Like the ugly stik pack rod. Any recommendation rods are very welcome please. Thanks!

most of us pier fisherman use two kinds of poles: a light one for catching bait fish with things like a Sabiki rig, and a sturdier one for casting out to where the bigger fish might be. a very long pole (10-15 feet) in either case keeps the line away from the pier where there are snags, etc. also helps to have a long pole for Sabiki rigs so you can use the full length to keep the numerous hooks from commingling when you're not in the water. I dont think the number of sections matters much, unless you're catching 30-50 pounders. then a one piece pole could make a difference.

My neighbor and family are movin. I’m going to miss them, great little guys and wife that even likes me, and that’s hard to find. But picked up a couple rods/reels a net and gaff hook with a bunch of heavy weights for ocean fishing today. Even got a propane cooker and pot. Don’t know much about the rods/reels but they have never been used so I’ll see if I can give them a try this year.

How's the fishing in your lake? I have land near Beatty that I have to visit and was wondering if I should bring some shore fishing gear with me. probably late august or september.

man are you in a great spot for both. if you just google "fishing near Alpine, Arizona" you will see many options, depending on how much effort you want to put into getting to the good spots. my two favorite lakes in the area are Big Lake, and Reservation Lake. you might need permits from the Indians but they're very cheep. The Little Colorado winds its way all thru the Greer area, with many good spots to fly or bait/lure fish. some restrictions, such as barbless hooks, no live bait, etc. Arizona Game and Fish puts out weekly reports on everything. If you get hungry or thirsty, try Molly Butler Lodge in Greer.

Went out halibut and Striper fishing again, day started out flat smooth with overcast fog, really nice, ended up sunny, hot, windy and choppy, but we stuck it out until 5pm or so. It was successful, but could’ve been better. We lost 4 large fish, but not sure what they were, caught 4 halibut shakers, 4 sharks (brown rough dog shark or something) and 2 halibut keepers. I’m holding the big one!😜

please let us know where on the bay you were fishing, and what was your rig/set up?

Well we got out to the fishin grounds and just couldn't find the fish. The baitfish were everwhere though.
We caught a few here and there but couldn't find the big schools.
Then we tried the other side of the river and found a bunch. Weren't any keepers in that school but we caught a ton of little ones.
We had 2 keepers on the stringer from earlier so that was OK.
When the bite died down there we moved back over to where we started and finally found a school of bigger fish. Finished up with 2 more good keepers and quit bout 1130.
Had a great day and the wind never picked up much at all until we were leavin then it started to blow a little. It was flat calm for the longest and it got pretty warm. It's rarely EVER flat calm there too.
Got back to the dock and it was 88* by noon when we loaded up and headed home.
Here's the 4 we kept today. 1 was 5 1/2 pounds , 1 was 4 1/2 , 1 was 3 1/2 and the little 1 was 3.
My half of the fillets.

whatever else you do, before gearing up and guessing what will work, go to a couple places that sell fishing stuff where you want to fish and get the local knowledge. they will want you to catch fish because it's good for their business, so you're not likely to get a bum steer. stream trout feed on whatever comes downstream as they cruise around, and fly fishing or Takara style are always best and most fun. All the shiny tiny lures will work, but I've always had great luck with Z-rays, silver or gold with red dots. 4lb test max. 2 better. not likely to pull out anything bigger than 2 lbs.
if fishing from a boat, try drifting just slower than the current (or anchor, if no trolling motor) and stay upstream from a baited hook, which should be bumping along the bottom as you drift. adjust weight of split shot to current, looking for it to bounce cleanly off the bottom ("riffle") with bait about a foot or so above the shot, drifting ahead of the shot if possible. we've used corn, mini-marshmellows, salmon eggs, or any combination on a small treble hook, with one hook uncovered. some people use Velveeta or other cheese bits, but we didn't have any so cant say from personal knowledge.
if it's a really slow-moving stream, you can try a slip bobber rig, to keep bait just off the bottom. same baits as above.

It depends on the jetty, some are easy to navigate and some are killers There is more structure and fish off of a jetty than the surf. I can't see anything hard about surf fishing except getting out there and getting. back in. Some places you can drive right out there to the surf. So it all depends.

what are some of the surf fishing places that you can drive right up to. I'm 73 so dont need the excitement of navigating jetties.
