Oregon City area. I received this message today it appears to have been hooked and landed or boated yesterday. What a nice fish. Fishing in Oregon can be very productive if one applies themself. This young man had one of his best days ever. It’s gotta be 50-60Lbs.

Much like the King Chinook Salmon that run in Alaska. This was caught in Oregon City Oregon. Lucky Day is all I gotta say. Congratulations to this fine young fisherman.

Hi Mike- I have caught a lot of fish at the confluence of the Klamath and Trinity Rivers at Weitchpec just not this time of year. Spring Salmon should start showing up in that area in May/June. There is also an early run of steelhead on the Klamath that reaches that area in mid to late August. Good luck and let us know how you did!

Rod- forgot to mention in my last post that the Southern Oregon Coast has some great Steelhead rivers that at some point you need to try. Here are some of them: Chetco, Pistol, Sixes, Rogue and Elk. These are all within 60 miles from the border. Go further up and try the Umpqua. Some big fish there! However, I've caught my biggest Steelhead on the Smith (22 1/2 lbs. and 21 lbs.)

I've heard good things about fishing below or above the Mad River fish hatchery. Check regs.

You used to have to get permission from Simpson Lumber Co. to fish above the Hatchery. There was a gate with a lock. Has that changed? I only fished up there once with a friend that had permission but has since passed away. The fishing was great but, like all coastal rivers, water conditions are everything.

Check out this website: fishingthenorthcoast.com The new rain will bring in the first Steelhead of the year in many of the coastal rivers. Up until recently they have been closed for fishing due to low water. They are now open. I think your best bet is the Smith but don't forget you can only keep hatchery Steelhead. You may also run into some late fall Salmon that have been hanging out in the lower river waiting for rain. There are a lot of good bank fishing locations on the Smith. If you want to learn the River, there are a lot of very good guides. Check out the Norrthern California Guide Service. I would use cured Salmon roe right now.

I just moved to Smith River, Ca. Looking for suggested places to fish and what to use!!! Also a shop to fix my boat motor.

Welcome aboard Petersen. Your lucky to live in such great country. You are right on the Smith River, near the Klamath river (40 miles south) and the Chetco River in Oregon (30 miles across the border). Also, the Eel River (75 miles south. These rivers hold some of the best Steelhead and Salmon fishing in California and Oregon. the Smith, Chetco and Eel Rivers are highly rain dependent for both Salmon and Steelhead. Right now, you should check out the fishing reports for Salmon on the Smith and Chetco. November rains usually bring the Salmon in on these rivers. I agree with the others that you should check with local tackle shops on what's going on and what tackle to use, etc. or stop by the Rowdy Creek hatchery right in Smith River. It's a privately funded hatchery and the only hatchery on the Smith River. (you can only keep hatchery fish on the Smith, all wild fish are catch and release). Also stop by Englund Marine in your area for fishing info and tackle. The best way to learn these beautiful rivers is to hire and guide. There are a lot of good ones in your area.

Thinking with the rains starting we should be hearing about the salmon moving out of the delta and into the Sacramento? Anyone fishing it yet with any good results. Would love to get the boat out and try. Thx Jim

Hello I am going fishing on a friend's property in Garberville in 2 weeks. The property is on the SF of Eel River. Will I catch any good fish right there, or will I need to travel up or down river. What Kind of fish are there?

Thanks!

I agree with Craig42. The Eel and it's tributaries are heavily rain dependent for Salmon and Steelhead. After November rains the fishing can be outstanding, before then, not much.
