Good morning, Peterson, and welcome to the Forum. Sorry, I can't help you. I would check with a local bait shop and see what they have to say about the problems.

Was just through there a couple of weeks ago on my way home. Sure looked "fishy" to me, from what I could see from the road. Good luck, and I agree with Flyguy, check with a local bait & tackle for fishing advice, & for a recommendation for getting your motor worked on as well... locals know best.

Welcome aboard Petersen. Your lucky to live in such great country. You are right on the Smith River, near the Klamath river (40 miles south) and the Chetco River in Oregon (30 miles across the border). Also, the Eel River (75 miles south. These rivers hold some of the best Steelhead and Salmon fishing in California and Oregon. the Smith, Chetco and Eel Rivers are highly rain dependent for both Salmon and Steelhead. Right now, you should check out the fishing reports for Salmon on the Smith and Chetco. November rains usually bring the Salmon in on these rivers. I agree with the others that you should check with local tackle shops on what's going on and what tackle to use, etc. or stop by the Rowdy Creek hatchery right in Smith River. It's a privately funded hatchery and the only hatchery on the Smith River. (you can only keep hatchery fish on the Smith, all wild fish are catch and release). Also stop by Englund Marine in your area for fishing info and tackle. The best way to learn these beautiful rivers is to hire and guide. There are a lot of good ones in your area.
