Thanks for the quick reply.
I could secure the pole to the side handles with carebiner clip. Do you think a dumbbell or barbell weight would be practical if heavy enough.

I fish inshore from a kayak in about 3 to 12 feet of water. Fl west coast around Cootee river I have a Ascend T10, and try to keep things as basic as possible. 1 Pole, small tackle box, etc.. I use a grapnel type anchor. Any current or wind will start me drifting. The anchor just will not bite. What type anchor do you suggest? What weight? Do you think an anchor trolley system is practical? Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks Ron, slightly confused when reading other posts as to wether they are relating to saltwater or freshwater fishing. Do bass fishing tips apply to both ?

new forum member, 3 posts so far. New to fishing and kayaks also( 6 months) .Wish I had taken up this hobby 50+ years ago. I fish mostly inshore from a kayak 2 to 3 days a week when practical. Mostly oyster beds and flats .i try to fish as tide is changing. I use Shrimp, #1 circle hook, 18” floro leader, 15# braid, penn rod and spinning reel. Carolina rig or Texas rig. I look for mangrove snapper, Redfish, sheepshead, amberjack.
Some good days, some not.
Confused as to options for bait, are soft plastics practical, wacky rigs, Ned rigs, what type lures ? looking for any and all suggestions but mostly just wanted to say thanks for the forum.

Maybe I’m impatient but I seem to spend more time changing gear and tying knots than fishing, hence trying to simplify my approach. I Start by freelining shrimp (20 minutes). If no luck, switch to top water lure (20 min). If Still no luck I’ll return to shrimp and add weight for a drop line. Snap-swivels cut down on time spent tying knots. Asking guy at tackle shop results in push for popping corks and $20. lures. Coming here for more practical advice. Thanks in advance

Fishing for redfish and black drum on Cootie river near Tampa. I have a small swivel clip on the end of a 20# braid line. I have 3 feet of mono running thru the clip. There is a 1/4 oz egg sinker on one end of the mono and a #2 circle hook with shrimp on the other end. I plan to use it as a drop rig from my kayak. Is this setup practical ? Any suggestions? As you can see from my other posts, this is all new to me.

Hey guys, told you I’d be back. While going thru some gear I’ve accumulated I’ve come across a few odds and ends. I have a saltwater spinning pole rated for up to 20 pound test and a spinning reel rated for up to 12 pound test. What problems would I create if I loaded the reel with 20 pound floro and matched it with the pole.

Thanks for the replies guys. I just picked up a Penn Spinfisher. The reel is sealed ( waterproof) rod is 7’. I’m using 20 pound test braid. Still wrestling with the rod holder, but that will come in time. I just discovered that the handle on my rod fits snugly in my scupper holes. Holds rod vertically with hook within easy reach to bait. I’ll be back with more questions as they come up.

Hi,I recently retired, took up fishing, bought a kayak and joined the forum. I live on the gulf coast of Fla. and judging from my success I need all the advice I can get. Fish mostly for redfish, sheepshead and other inshore species using live shrimp for bait.
ill limit this post to one question. I have a 10 foot sit on top kayak, using a 7.5 foot pole. Finding it difficult to bait the hook without soaking the reel. What length do you recommend? Any tips?
