Fishing for redfish and black drum on Cootie river near Tampa. I have a small swivel clip on the end of a 20# braid line. I have 3 feet of mono running thru the clip. There is a 1/4 oz egg sinker on one end of the mono and a #2 circle hook with shrimp on the other end. I plan to use it as a drop rig from my kayak. Is this setup practical ? Any suggestions? As you can see from my other posts, this is all new to me.
Running THROUGH (?) the "clip" (aka snap swivel, I assume) with a hook at one end and sinker at the other ? Sounds like "tangle city".
An egg sinker (hole through the center)is not used at the "end", ever. They are designed to have the line run THROUGH....not tied, at all. Use a "bass sinker" (the ones with a swivel eyelet for drop shotting. Your description makes me envision the 3' of line as being able to slip back and forth with both the hook and the sinker being the "bumpers" on either end....a mess waiting to happen and zero points for presentation. Check YouTube for drop-shot rigs.... you mostly have the components, you just need to get familiar with how to sequence the assembly. A visit to a good tackle shop might also yield good advice. Good luck!

Here we have a guy from S.W. Oregon trying to help a guy in Tampa, FL., isn't that great?
Maybe I’m impatient but I seem to spend more time changing gear and tying knots than fishing, hence trying to simplify my approach. I Start by freelining shrimp (20 minutes). If no luck, switch to top water lure (20 min). If Still no luck I’ll return to shrimp and add weight for a drop line. Snap-swivels cut down on time spent tying knots. Asking guy at tackle shop results in push for popping corks and $20. lures. Coming here for more practical advice. Thanks in advance
Run your braid through your slip sinker, add a bead for knot protection, and tie on a barrel swivel. Attach your 18” mono/fluoro leader to the other end of the swivel, then your hook at the end of the leader.
FixorFish is right. Slide the egg sinker on the line, then put the swivel snap on the end of the line. Then put your leader on the Snap with the hook at the end. Learned it as a Sliding Sinker. Get to the east Coast and they call it a Carolina Rig, or Fish Finder. The idea is that when the fish picks up the bait, they can't feel the weight of the sinker. If using minnows they can swim and you can still feel a hit. The Swivel Snap acts as a stopper for the sinker.
Thanks guys.keep advice coming. It is appreciated and much needed
I fish for Tautog offshore here in RI. I use #30 power pro braided tied to 2 ft of 25/30 lb mono. (YOUTUBE TIE BRAID TO MONO). At the tail end of mono tie a surgeon knot for a bank sinker. I dont know how deep you are fishing so use the appropriate weight for the waters. About 6 inches above the surgeon knot tie a dropper loop. You can make it long enough to accommodate a circle hook or whatever type of hook. Again I'm not familiar with fishing for drum and this how I fish for Tautog/Blackfish. Hope this helps and good luck!
