Hi,I recently retired, took up fishing, bought a kayak and joined the forum. I live on the gulf coast of Fla. and judging from my success I need all the advice I can get. Fish mostly for redfish, sheepshead and other inshore species using live shrimp for bait.
ill limit this post to one question. I have a 10 foot sit on top kayak, using a 7.5 foot pole. Finding it difficult to bait the hook without soaking the reel. What length do you recommend? Any tips?

Welcome HappyDaze, have been looking into kayaks for when I retire and start doing in shore fishing myself. The are a lot of good people on here and I'm sure you will get some good feedback. I have noticed that there are rod holders on the kayaks i have looked and and should be able to buy add on's if your does not come with some. If you put your rod in the rod holder and let line out, you should be able to accomplish putting on your bait.

Hey Happydaze, welcome to the retirement world and as well to this forum. I to purchased a kayak not to long ago and what I do with my 7' rods is to place the reel in my lap and the rest of the rod extends over the side for baiting. For releasing a catch I put the rod in a holder, let out enough slack, remove fish and at this point re bait if needed.

I use a 6 foot bait casting rod when I first bring in the fish I place my rod in a rod holder and then I play fish doctor.

I’ve been kayak fishing for 13 years. I have learned that a 6 to 6.6 foot rod works best for me. Think of all the situations while fishing, these rods would allow me to maintain with minimal problems. There are trade offs on the equipment you carry; you will decide what best marries the conditions you fish in and your style.

Thanks for the replies guys. I just picked up a Penn Spinfisher. The reel is sealed ( waterproof) rod is 7’. I’m using 20 pound test braid. Still wrestling with the rod holder, but that will come in time. I just discovered that the handle on my rod fits snugly in my scupper holes. Holds rod vertically with hook within easy reach to bait. I’ll be back with more questions as they come up.
