What's the best way to determine if a fish is too injured to survive. I hooked a pike a while back while fishing for pan fish. Took a little bit to get that thing unhooked (nasty teeth) . Looked pretty bad so we left him in a 5 gallon bucket until he seemed to move and returned the little guy to the lake. Is this a good way or is there a better way. Very new to this and trying to learn as we go.
shore or Kayak currently but this trip will be an off shore charter.
My daughter is planning a Lake Erie walleye fishing tip in July for my birthday. We have very basic gear for pan fish and small bass. Any suggestions or rod and reel combos that would work for this trip that we could also use for larger bass, crappie, and possibly pike fishing? or are they much different setups?
Amy talked to a coworker from Hillsdale area. Suggested fishing the bottom near drop offs if you know the lake. He says Crappie walleye, Sauger perch and the walleye hybrids would be your most likely targets. Also heard some pike being taken. Check with a local bait shop for your best suggestion on what is working. Thinking of trying my self this weekend. Going to try a dock demon rod rather than spending more on an ice fishing rod.
Good luck
I would agree with Gymyd1234 longer is better. I have a 10.5 foot without pedals and a 350 pound rating there is no way Im standing up on that with out going swimming. The way you want to transport is also an issue. a 10.5 rides well in an 8 foot pickup bed 12 footer would tend to want to tip out while transporting.
Live west of Toledo myself, the lakes all have thin ice on them around me. I would check out any reservoirs in your area. The one in Defiance was ice free the other day, when I drove up to the boat ramp. I have read the DNR has stocked walleye and saugeye in reservoirs in the northern part of the state. Google your local spots on premier angler it gives an idea of what fish are in that body of water. good luck. Im trying to figure out this winter fishing myself. My daughter got me started late last summer we are now picking out better gear. 15 dollar zebco too agravating.
