10.5 foot vs 12 foot kayak?

I'm looking to buy a fishing kayak, one with pedals and that is sit on top. But I am deciding between a 10.5foot and 12 foot kayak. What are the advantages/disadvantages to both lengths?

I plan on using the kayak in smaller lakes and ponds for the most part. I would prefer for it to be stable and for the ability to stand/fish without having to worry about tipping.

Magginator8: Well partner, you left out one critical fact. How big and strong are you? You are the one to handle this Kayak. So , are you going ot haul it on a trailer or put it up on the roof of your vehicle, which you also didn't mentkion. See, we need more details. I would personally go for the longer one if you can handle it. Just Sayin....RJS

Longer will more than likely be more stable, but test them both, if possible.

It really depends on the type of fishing you are doing too, Magginator. Welcome to The Stage :-)
Longer ones track better, meaning they go on a straighter line when you paddle. If you plan to paddle any distance, the longer ones will be better. I would try before you buy and see what you are comfortable with. That includes, paddling it, standing in it, lifting it. Ensure it has places to mount rod holders and other kayak accessories. Just some things to look at - I've been kayak fishing for over 10 years now. Started off with an Ocean Kayak Scrambler XT, which was a short one, then upgraded to a Hobie Revolution 13", which I have 3 of, since I was on the National Hobie Fishing Team. I love those kayaks :-)

Go with a 12’ one if you can handle the weight. Most 12’ and especially w/peddle drives are over 100lbs. If the weight isn’t an issue the 12’ will track better and should be more stable, as you have more room to stand and move about. Good luck on your adventure.

I have a 10 Foot and it's perfect in bays, Lagoons here in Florida and even in open ocean near the inlet on a calm day. BUT , and this is experience and some lost gear talking, if you want to stand and fish you want the 12 footer for sure. Also from experience, be sure you get pedal fins that flex front to back an not side to side when you hit submerged objects or shallow shoals and oyster beds, or you'll be paddling in no time. Sounds complicated but really not. You will have the time of your life my Friend!!! Best tool? Get a metal grabber, you know the picking up trash type. Saves a whole lot of stretching and reaching and makes everything close. Let us know when you pull the trigger and join the Yakers on here.

I would agree with Gymyd1234 longer is better. I have a 10.5 foot without pedals and a 350 pound rating there is no way Im standing up on that with out going swimming. The way you want to transport is also an issue. a 10.5 rides well in an 8 foot pickup bed 12 footer would tend to want to tip out while transporting.

New to kayaking I use an OldTown 106 MK and it very stable. Has a removeable trolling motor.
