I see the advertisement on the stage for the Mercury V12 600hp outboard motor and wonder just who among us will be able to part with a minimum of$77,000. A new bass boat anywhere between $55k and $75k. Plus a new tow vehicle at min $35k. I look at these figures and think I could buy a pretty nice house for that. Why do we submit to paying these prices and put up with the new and better always costing much more?

Just askin

the same person who would buy a Ferrari, Lamborghini or even a Tesla X when a used Kia would get you from point a to point b for a lot cheaper. I went from rubber raft to canoe to 12 aluminum to now a 16' smoker craft and would sure like to have a 20' alumaweld but to expensive for my budget even used at this stage in my life so I will stick with my smokercraft and Subaru outback unless I win the lottery or something. as for being able to by a pretty nice house for $115,000??? around here you couldn't even by a bare lot to build a house on for that and the average 1,800 sq ft house that is 40 years old will still cost you a min. of $500,000 and even if you can find one for that price it will most likely sell with in 2 days with half dozen buyers biding the price even higher in some cases $100,000 over asking price.

Ain't that the truth! I purchase "store bought" fish now and then...and "never" flinch at the price! We have a local supermarket that usually has some nice offerings...such as Canadian caught walleye for instance...

Well if you really think that is expensive, (I do) the new V12 is being put on the back of million dollar boats, and usually three or four are pushing a 40 ft yacht, and getting it on step! One of the guys I know, built his own boat, looks like an airstream camper, with a deck in back, and a fly bridge on top. He pushes that with three 350 yamaha's. He told me it took him seven yrs to pay for all the motors. I looked up the price on those, and they are 30k+ each. Just one of those uses 1.6 gallons of fuel per idle, don't know how much he burns per hr. while underway, real heavy boat. Everytime he goes out, he puts in about 2k $ of fuel in the tank.

So you believe that it is ok that the manufacturers leave us behind? Ferrari and Lamborghini and Tesla are not the only manufacturers of cars yet the boat manufacturers reach for the buyers of those automobiles while expecting those of us with modest means are priced out.

Well Porch did not leave everyone behind. They built the VW beetle. Yep, and look how long they lasted, you might even STILL have one, many do!

Honestly don’t think they make a bassboat that can handled a 600 hp… but if they do I want to ride in it ! Boats are expensive. Very expensive as I know having bought my last new boat which is number eleven. Bought down in size and dollars this time. Have a fishing friend that fishes professionally in the MLF. Just got a new 21 ft bassboat. Rigged as is about $115K. Of course he’s sponsored and didn’t pay that, but the dealership had multiple people trying to buy it as they were rigging it. Guess it’s all about priorities. A lot of people with big money out there. I’m not one of them. Still bend over to pick up loose change on the sidewalk and will bypass Starbucks to get my .99 cent coffee at my Am/Pm

You would be surprised how many of those high dollar boats go to auction after a year (+/-) of payments. Dealers pick them right back up again and resell. If you watch, on the road, you will see carriers with ten new-looking boats on board. They are heading for new locations to be resold. A very interesting business.

The price of boats is not unreasonable compared to the cost of construction. The cost of labor and construction, once 20% of the boat cost, is now 80% of the boat cost. Boat manufacturing liability insurance has gone off the deep end, Workman's compensation insurance is out of this world. Even excess material disposal (almost all considered toxic) has become a major expense. Federal regulations on both safety and construction methods have also driven the price up. The profit market is very low on both boats and electronics. From a dealers view point, the boat is just a platform to encourage accessories sales. If you haven't noticed, many boat builders have gone out of business or have gone bankrupt. Not many new companies are filling the vacancies. Even Evinrude is past history due to environmental regulations. On a different subject: buying an extremely high cost boat for a tournament fisherman is totally different from a normal sport fisherman. 2 knot increase in speed to beat a competitor to a spot, or a boat that provides just one more fish can mean $1,000,000 plus endorsements. $150,000 is just the cost of doing business. Finally, and most important, it is no one else's business what a man or woman spends there money on if they earned it legally and meet their financial obligations.. That is how trickle down economy is supposed to work in a capitalistic system.

Gotta wonder ...if someone hangs two or more of those big V6 outboards on the back end of his boat, what the heck do they make the transom out of? That's a mess of heavy weight back there, and when you hit the throttle there's going to be some nasty forces pushing and twisting on the transom!

An outboard motor applies forward force at the bottom part of the transom clamp, and rearward force at the top. It's literally trying to twist the transom off the back end of the boat. For the boat in this picture, I'd have to imagine a transom 6 or 8 inches thick, and made of something tough!

Their prices are so high due to having to recover their boat give/really low price for the pros boats. People that are getting into fishing are uneducated that you don't need to pay that much for a boat but they think that is what they need and what it takes to catch fish. After a year or two of not catching fish because it is the boats fault they sell it at a loss. There is probably several damaged areas due to not knowing how to operate the boat with that much power let a lone not knowing how to use the electronics to stay out of shallow stumpy rocky places. Several have landed the boat up on the bank or a sand bar at high speeds. They think they are getting away from the covid crap and there a lot of new boaters this last year that never wet a hook before. Plus they can't back a boat down a ramp so be careful out there. We all started somewhere but I think those of us that have fished for a while started out in a lower cost boat.
