I tried to get my wife to let me buy a pontoon boat and she said yes until I jokingly showed her the 30 footer with four 450 H.P. motors on it and it does a cool 70 miles an hour with a price tag of about 250,000. For that it should come with a captain and an open fully stocked bar.

Thats why I joined a boating club. Less expensive, less headaches, no maintenance costs, and I can book boats nation wide.
And when hurricane Henri passed thru I had no worries.

Though I just tried to justify the boat cost, I personally would not spend the money for it at my age. I would rather just schedule a bunch of charter trips. Say 6 trips to places like Panama and Cosa Rica and few hundred $200 to $600 day trips as well as a $15,000 used boat. 6x$10,000 + 200x$300 + $20,000 = $140,000. That leaves enough left for used fifth wheel in warm winter location.

Gotta wonder ...if someone hangs two or more of those big V6 outboards on the back end of his boat, what the heck do they make the transom out of? That's a mess of heavy weight back there, and when you hit the throttle there's going to be some nasty forces pushing and twisting on the transom!

An outboard motor applies forward force at the bottom part of the transom clamp, and rearward force at the top. It's literally trying to twist the transom off the back end of the boat. For the boat in this picture, I'd have to imagine a transom 6 or 8 inches thick, and made of something tough!

Hey Barney, those in your picture are V-12s,not V6s. On the boats designed for more than 2 motors, the stringers run all the way out to the mounting points. You are pushing the whole skeleton of the boat, not just the transom. There are center consoles out there designed for 6-Merc 450Rs, which are V-8s.
There are U-Tube channels watching boats going out of Florida inlets and harbors, like Haulover Inlet, and Miami Harbor. Watch them and you'll see many 4,5,6 engine boats going in and out. There's a lot of them down there. Somebody has money.

My daughter has a Tesla 4 door. That thing has a “ launch mode” feature in it. It will go from 0-60 in 2 seconds. I’m not joking....My 2cents.

So you believe that it is ok that the manufacturers leave us behind? Ferrari and Lamborghini and Tesla are not the only manufacturers of cars yet the boat manufacturers reach for the buyers of those automobiles while expecting those of us with modest means are priced out.

not sure what you mean by leave us behind I was never with them to start with, but yes a manufacturer can charge whatever they want and it makes no difference to me I just buy what I can afford and it took me a long time before I could afford to buy my used 16' 40hp tracer and I caught a lot of fish before I could afford it and enjoy and catch a lot of fish with it but I don't feel left behind when I see all those bigger and fancier boats out there, what someone else has doesn't distract from the fun and enjoyment with what I have been blessed to have. I was once told everything you own, owns a piece of you. With boats I think this is really true the bigger the boat the bigger piece of you it owns and it will consume your time, and your money so I would give thoughtful consideration before going all in, how much of myself am I willing to give up to get a bigger, better, and faster boat again the ol cost vs benefit equation the answer will be different for every person and for some $2500 boat will be to big of a cost for others a $150,000 boat will be worth the cost. In my case a $10,000 boat was worth it but a $35,000 is not.

Suits me fine, and as for the fish, they taste the same no matter what price the craft.

You and I think alike Plumbob, simple life is a good life. Now if I hit the lotto that's another story

Just look at it in a different way… I don’t belong to an exclusive club, neither drink or play golf, my enjoyment in fishing is fantastic and I am not in hurry to get to the fishing spots, lots of time available to do it right… as result the catching is fantastic and the fishing is right along all the time.

Oops. You're right Fred, V12's. I think that boat would be out of my league even if I'd won the lottery! I'd falter at the cost of a set of spark plugs! 48 plugs at somewhere between 4 and 5 bucks each means as much as $245 just for a set of plugs!

...Here's another perspective about spark plugs: Imagine it's the late 1940's and you're a mechanic on Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose. You clock in for work and your boss tells you to clean and gap the plugs. Let's see.... eight engines, 28 cylinders each, and two plugs per cylinder. That thing had 448 spark plugs. That ought to keep you busy until lunchtime ...next week.

I used to think "more is always better", but maybe not.

Whoops made a mistake on fuel consumption! The 300hp will consume over 6 gallons per hr, at idle. Now if you have three or four on the back of your boat, that spells over 18 gallons or more sitting at the dock for an hour, at idle. Times dock fuel, you just burned thru over $90 bucks and haven't left yet. My friend doesn't ever pay for fuel, he has the guys that go out in his boat pick up the fuel tab, which is over 2K each time. He goes out for a few days, and has room for 10 in the sleeping quarters, plus another for him.

That sure is a lot of fuel! Nice arrangement that the passengers are in agreement to cover the petrol expenses!

When I fish in my kayak, the cost of energy is measured in Hostess fruit pies...whether cherry, apple or blueberry I always seem to get the same mileage! By the way...those rascals have sure gone up in price. As a kid, I think they were around a quarter...but last week, up in Munising, MI, I paid $2.19 apiece! I guess everything is subject to inflation!

I used to buy those Hostess pies at the 'day old' bakery for packing my lunchbox. Frankly, I couldn't hardly tell the difference between those and the fresh ones from the supermarket. I got ten of them for $1.00, that's a dime apiece. Seems like only yesterday, but it was 51 years ago.
