I just filet them with my 12 volt filet knife and don’t even gut em. Works pretty slick and no mess at all. I carry a folding plastic table, pop it out, plug in the filet knife and swipe/swipe they’re done. Do it next to the river and just dunk the table in the river when I’m done. Then I carry a bottle of dawn dishwashing liquid for clean up. I can filet a dozen cats in about 15/20 minutes and be on my way with clean filets in the cooler.

I live in Cobbs Creek, Va. I would like to know where is a good place in the area to catch Catfish. I'm willing to travel within 50 miles or so from home. Rather new to the area.

Love to see YouTube video of this, Using the electric filet knife, and your technique. Please. Just please don't do a lot of chatting. A. B. C.
So many just want to be a "star". Thanks.

All of the above are good however it depends on what species of catfish you are after. Stink baits are normally for channel cats. Flatheads like their bait live so small bream are great also shiners and shad. Blues will eat anything. Here in Nc we have success making chunks of chicken soaked overnight in garlic salt it workes great.

Wall-Mart has a Strike King 120 V electric knife for $12. I haven't tried it yet but I am going to. 12 volt ones are more money. I won't felet a fish without an electric knife. It is just so much faster. Just start at the gills, keep your blade against the back bone, cutting through the rib bones to the tail. Do not cut through the skin at the tail. Flip it over onto the felet board and take the skin off with the electric knife. I have done it that way with all my fish for 30 years. Except catfish. The rib bones are so hard to cut through on a catfish. I would skin a catfish first and then felet them with my regular felet knife. But last year I saw a demonstration on catfish just like Catfish Hunter said. It is the only wat to go. Just force it through those rib bones.

I use chicken livers but have caught a couple on night crawlers and small bream. Best was a few years back, 24 on.

There’s about a table spoon sized amount of meat from the ribs forward on any catfish. I just start and the back of the ribs and cut to the tail, but not trough the skin, flip it over and skin it with the filet knife. Just like any other fish. Works slick with a 12 volt Berkley fillet knife I got at sportsman’s warehouse for $16.00. Sorry if I wrote too much this time. Tried to cut it down a little🤷‍♂️

Sorry. There’s always the “don’t read it” option if it’s a little detailed for ya😉

I do it the same way. Back of the ribs to just behind the anil hole. Doesn't touch the inners.
