Yep, perch it is. My favorite day is perching at the lake. I don't care what I catch, so long as I catch. They are all fun to catch. Bait or frying pan.
AMEN with that WH just fish๐บ๐ธ๐ฃ๐๐

They're all perch in California too, which is really odd because there are no perch to speak of here. I know all this, I just like people to explain it to me to see where they're coming from. And I really wanted to know why he said bream and bluegills in the same sentence. Kinda like saying you like to fish for trout and rainbows. I'd like him to explain the difference to me. But looks like we'll probably never hear from him again.
Hello 27. I'm with you on throwing names at those delicious little critters. I go after bluegills but in my fish basket will be redears, punpkinseed, green sunfish & I couldn't name them all. I can tell you with a certainty that when fileted they all look alike & once the're all crusty & golden brown they all taste the same. My grandpa called them all perch & to him they were only bait for flathead. Get out in your pontoon & catch a mess, it's fun. Tight lines.
I don't think I need to be an ichthyologist to catch fish.

KIVAS,??? now I have a headache
There are MANY members of the sunfish family. A little research will reveal which species you have in hand. Bluegills and rock bassare the most widespread, redear mainly in the south, along with warmouth (stumpknockers) flier, and longear. Pumkinseeds are mostly found in the northern states. The redbreast sunfish is mainly a stream and river fish. Learning to ID the different species might enhance your enjoyment of the fishing experience. It does for me.

Bream have no relation to the other โsunfishโ, nor do black or white crappie. LM and SM bass are sunfish.
True "Bream "are a European fish, and Crappie are in the Sunfish family as well.

I call all panfish panfish. That means they'll fit in a pan. I still don't get it. So a bream is just a word for a fish that ain't a crappie?
Hello Spirit. You are concerned about a subject that will never be figured out or changed to make sense. How many things in this world that should be simple are made more complicated than needed? Years ago I had a neat little booklet all about crappie fishing. Not bluegill, not sunfish, not perch. Just crappie! One page alone was about the names that people from all over the country had for crappie. I can't remember the exact number of different names, but it was a very long list. One that I still remember was "strawberry perch." Really. What part of a crappie looks like anything resembling a perch or strawberries? Again, the list of names was ridiculous. Why?
