Haven't visited this topic in a while. What's the difference between a bream and a bluegill? Growing up in Indiana, we had a lot of bluegills. My dad, who was from Alabama, called them "brim".

we call all panfish (except crappie) "bream" and that way you don't have to differentiate between a red ear and a bluegill.

I call all panfish panfish. That means they'll fit in a pan. I still don't get it. So a bream is just a word for a fish that ain't a crappie?

I think brim, sunfish, gills and such are one and the same but I could be wrong.

"bream crappie bluegills" if bream and bluegills are the same fish, why mention them separately? I'm not trying to be a smartass, I'd really like to know. When I fished with my dad we mostly fished for crappie, catfish and brim. When I fished with my grandpa we fished for crappie, perch and bluegills. The bluegills and the brim were the same fish.

Painfishing is something I used to do. That's when you went and got skunked and it hurt your pride. Them days are long gone for me. Not the skunk part, but the hurtful. I got over that years ago.

"bream crappie bluegills" if bream and ... (show quote)

Spirit, Bluegill, Redear, Pumpkinseed and Redbreast are all legitimate members of the Sunfish family. Crappie are also in the Sunfish family, just a different branch. Brim or Bream is a nickname for all members of the Sunfish family, mostly in the south. Until you get to Texas, where they call them all Perch. It's very confusing talking to different people about the same fish.

They're all perch in California too, which is really odd because there are no perch to speak of here. I know all this, I just like people to explain it to me to see where they're coming from. And I really wanted to know why he said bream and bluegills in the same sentence. Kinda like saying you like to fish for trout and rainbows. I'd like him to explain the difference to me. But looks like we'll probably never hear from him again.

Don't be sorry no big deal, we all have different names for the same thing. Hell my brother's name is Joe and we all call him John go figure.
