I put out a text to the family the other night to see if any of them wanted to go ice fishing on Saturday. My son in law replied that my daughter would go. I asked why he wouldn’t go too, but he said he’d stay home with the kids so she could go. He’s been out with me before but my daughter hadn’t. She works every other Saturday and I guess we’ve always gone when she had to work. None of the boys could, or wanted to go. I asked the daughters in law that had been out with us before if they wanted to make it a Dad and the girls trip. One daughter in law said she’d go so it looked like it was the three of us. Friday night my one son that had said he couldn’t go said he might be coming. When I asked him about the plans that had him not able to go, he said his wife didn’t want him to be gone all day Saturday, but since she was going with me he thought he could come.
So the four of us headed out as early as I could get them to agree to go. We followed a storm to the lake. We weren’t ever in the storm, but the roads were a mess all the way there. The “parking lot” was covered with a bunch of fresh snow and we pretty much snagged the last spot to park.
Where we parked was up above the lake. There’s a pretty steep hill to come down that had at least a couple feet of snow we had to walk through. It was a bit of work getting down to the lake and the snow was over the tops of our boots, so that kind of sucked.
We set up the tent and settled in. My daughter in law caught two nice fish and I got one. My son and my daughter didn’t catch any, but we had a great time. We were pretty much at the same spot we went to right after Christmas, but there weren’t near as many fish yesterday. We pretty much caught all we saw on the fish finders.
I got a new six man tent getting ready to take a bunch of teenaged boys and some leaders out later this month. We tried it out yesterday. It was nice to have the extra room. As always, it was a great day for me to do the two things I love the most, spending time with family and fishing.

Thanks Andy, if you get a chance you should give it a try. It really is a great way to fish and hang out with family.

Looking at the holes in the photos, that Ice needs about a foot more thickness for my likings. Clearly, my Ice fishing days are pretty much over after leaving Alaska. I can handle that cracking sound that travels across the ice as it cracks on thick ice even though it rattles my nerves. On 6 inch ice, it takes the fun out of it for me.

I am aware of that, Same problem in Washington. That is why I am sitting here typing on my computer rather than fishing. Oh Well, another month and I will be out chasing fish in soft water (subject th Washington weather getting back to somewhat normal). I always start getting a bit of cabin fever this time of year. Have a great year and enjoy the family.

Actually there was a bunch more ice than it looks like from that angle. As you can see, I’m not a small guy. I won’t consider going out on less than six inches and really want at least eight. We had probably 18 inches Saturday.

Wow, twice on one knee sounds horrible.

Oddly enough, I decided to take up ice fishing the winter after I had knee replacement surgery on both of my knees six weeks apart that fall. I had the second one done middle of October and was out on the ice early January. Not being in pain all night after trudging through a couple feet of snow was what convinced me the surgeries were a good decision.

Now, I would be all over that. Ice fishing is a blast. Even more so if you have a video camera, an ice fishing house and a designated driver or warm overnight cabin lakeside.

Trout are great through the ice, but my personal preference is jumbo yellow perch with the possibility of a large pike or lake trout thrown in.

Yep, last year for my birthday my wife tried to get all my boys to go on a boy’s trip. Only one son and my only son in law were willing or able to go. We got a place right off the lake to stay. It was awesome to fish all day, walk a couple hundred yards and have a warm place to sleep after grilling some steaks. I could get into doing that regularly.

That would be great. Not a lot of places like that here in Utah. Going somewhere to catch big walleye, pike and lake trout is a bucket list item for me for sure. We really don’t even have jumbo perch here. Most of the perch I’ve ever caught were really small.

Two years ago saw some guys ice fishing in the middle of Caples Lake here in California. Don’t know how thick the ice was but they were out there. That is the first time I had seen that in California.
