We can salvage deer here as long as we call and get a permit but not elk. The local game warden gathers up any elk hit and he decides who’s gonna get some

We don’t have to have a permit here in Idaho. They like us to call and report where we got it but there’s no paperwork to fill out and, like many other states, there’s no permit required. When I lived in Oregon you had to have a permit BEFORE you found road kill and had to pay for it. Just in case you ever found any. Typical of that area. Not so here or I several other states. Plus we can keep the head and horns as well. They want us to take the entire animal though. Not just the good stuff. Fair enough.

A lot of good eating there. Hopefully he got the chance to share his genes before he got hit, but that is probably why he got hit in the first place…chasing cows. At least he didn’t go to waste.
Our car kills can be taken after a call to the local authorities as well. There is a list available for those folks that would want a call to salvage a car kill. If they don’t answer or can’t get to it right away, the next person gets the call. Careful on the roads all, mating season is starting and the bucks and bulls only have one thing on their minds for about 2 weeks.

That sounds like such a "sensible policy"... It's almost difficult to believe that "The Government" has "come up with it" (on it's own).

Good Lord! What a huge Elk. Hope not too much meat was ruined. That semi had to have a lot of damage.

Glad they let someone salvage it. We can do that here in Idaho too. Just pick it up and use it. No permits required or anything. It’s nice to see places allow that👍

You can pick up game that you hit in Oregon but you first have to call fish and game

Texas, of course, has a different law:

A deer has been hit on the highway, what do I do?

A1: If the deer is just injured call your local game warden dispatcher. If you are absolutely sure the deer is dead, you may move it off the roadway and leave it there. Texas Department of Transportation will remove the dead animal. It is illegal to tag the deer (or any game animal for that matter) and take it with you.

Years ago, I saw a lady standing on the roadway and she had hit a doe whitetail which was still alive, but dying. I turned around to see if I could help the lady. Her car was badly damaged. No cell phones back then. I took her to a nearby gas station to call her husband then we went back to wait on him. A cop showed up and called the game wardens office. Pretty soon the game warden arrived. I told him I was going to cut her throat to put her out her misery but she had died while we were gone. He told me it’s a good thing I didn’t because I would have been fined for talking a deer out of season. He didn’t stutter when he said it either. I think that sucks.

The young guys offered to pay me, give me some of the Elk, but I didn’t take them up there offer. I’ve had hunters give up their hunt to help me drag a deer out of the woods. I considered this paying it forward. Ironically they and I were headed out to go deer hunting, as it was the last day of modern. I think they came out ahead😁

Glad it was salvaged. Idaho started the trend. I have done few deer here in Oregon. Just have to report to the state like all states that allow it to get permit. Since CV we don’t have to turn in head / horns. It’s all electronic in Oregon now. Just go to a website and report.

Wonder why only one person had to pay? Strange information. The permit is required within a time period for free. Never had a fee. But maybe some pay a fee and the rest of us just do what the online instructions say

I have never paid anything for road kill permits in Oregon EVER. I remember when Idaho started the trend and permit is required just as here.

Often times, as it is in Oregon, what you "google" is not actually what it is. I live in Idaho and I've lived in Oregon. I know how the law works here and it's not according to what is googled all the time. A friend of mine retrieved a road kill elk here and she called game and fish. They told her to go ahead and take it and wanted to know where she found it. No permit required. That's fact. The internet don't always explain the enforcement. It's up to the officer contacted.

Not sure about Washington but it would behoove you to check current laws. Things change quite often with government.

It was through hunting groups convincing them.

Gotcha. Thanks. When I lived there you had to be on a list first. Good to see things have changed a little for you guys. There's none of that here. We can just pick it up and go. I helped a guy last year pick up a mule deer buck that was hit and still alive. He shot it with his pistol to finish it off. While we were field dressing it in the borrow ditch along Highway 95 a game warden went by. Didn't even stop. The guy called it in and they said they already knew about it and he just needed to pick it up and take the entire animal. They also asked him to drag the gut pile away from the road so other animals might not get hit so easily trying to eat it. That was it. He was done with the game and fish. They asked his name and if he had hit it or found it. He said he found it but it was still alive. Told them he dispatched it with a hand gun. They told him thanks for doing that and told him to enjoy the meat. Pretty awesome here in more ways than one👍
