I was looking through the various topics, and one of the posts caught my eye. Mentioned was a first car. What was your first car? Mine was a 1936 Chevy Pickup. It was given to me by a farmer that wanted it out of his barn. It was 1955, I was 14. I had to replace the windows, battery, wood floor boards in the bed and cab. No radio, easily remedied. Seat covers were redone, a lot of rewiring, and a paint job in school colors, of course. A new short block, 6 cylinder, $40.00, at that tine. Lots of help from Grandfather, who was a very good mechanic, and very patient with me. The truck was repainted college colors when I left for that period of my life. The truck provided me with transportation through college. I would love to have that truck back. Some of the best memories of my life were connected with it. (Even if the seat was not the most comfortable)

First car: a wonderful 1962 Triumph TR4A. No roof just a tonneau cover, no floor-rubber mats popriveted to what was left of the floor pan and a cardboard trans tunnel. Absolutely the most fun car I have ever owned! Wish I could afford one these days.

My first car was a 1951 Ford, got it in 1962.

When a tire wore out, I'd pull it off the rim and take it out into farm country and leave it in a pile of old tires along the road. Farmers used the old tires to cross the road with their caterpillar tractors without tearing up the pavement. I'd rummage through the pile and find another tire that was better than the one I was leaving, and then drive on that one for a month or so until it gave out.

It had the legendary flathead V-8, which I was so proud of - until I realized that the straight six weighed a LOT less and produced only 5 less horsepower.

The engine had a cracked block ( five cracks, actually ) and overheated reliably. Reliably is kind of an understatement. I always carried one or two old bleach bottles full of water. Also, I knew by heart every water hole, windmill, ditch, stream, pond, puddle, stock tank and bird bath within 50 miles of my home. No exaggeration!

I used to pull over and pick up empty pop bottles for the deposit, for gas money.

I had a lot of great adventures in that old car. Some of them, I won't tell you about! Let your imagination take you there!

A 1964 Chevy step side short box Pickup with a straight 6 and a stick shift, got it when my dad passed away in a car crash. (Not his fault) Grew up pretty quick after that, I was 13

You guys are a little bit older than me. I bought my first car in 1971. It was a 1961 red Corvair - 4 door. As Ralph Nader said - unsafe at any speed. It was a car that provided transportation and independence. Automatic transmission with a lever on the dashboard to put it in gear. Cost me $150.00. Ran it into the ground and sold it for $150.00. (note I put about $500 into it to fix some engine issues. Also did a bunch or work on the cosmetics - floor boards, etc.

I miss that car!

Ok, worse car that I owned was a Dodge Omni, can’t remember the year. Engine was good, I think that they used the Volkswagen Rabbit engine. Rest of the car was junk, the carpet kept coming out of the trim work and the headlight lens trim was held on with double sided tape and fell off. We bought the car new. Haven’t owned a Dodge since.

AM28,
When I was in college, after a divorce, very poor, I ended up with a Corvair, also for$150. It burned oil so badly I sometimes drove it with my head out the window on a cold morning because the defroster blew so much smoke I couldn't see out the windshield. I worked in a gas station at night. When I changed oil for a customer I used to save the old oil to run through that Corvair. I don't miss that car.

A 1953 Chevy 4 door. I was about 10 and we were planting beans in the back 40. As dad was taking the tractor back to the barn I though he would have me drive the tractor but he says... "bring the car I'll see you at the barn." I said I don't know how to drive the car. He says you will when you get to the barn!!, and off he went.
