I was looking through the various topics, and one of the posts caught my eye. Mentioned was a first car. What was your first car? Mine was a 1936 Chevy Pickup. It was given to me by a farmer that wanted it out of his barn. It was 1955, I was 14. I had to replace the windows, battery, wood floor boards in the bed and cab. No radio, easily remedied. Seat covers were redone, a lot of rewiring, and a paint job in school colors, of course. A new short block, 6 cylinder, $40.00, at that tine. Lots of help from Grandfather, who was a very good mechanic, and very patient with me. The truck was repainted college colors when I left for that period of my life. The truck provided me with transportation through college. I would love to have that truck back. Some of the best memories of my life were connected with it. (Even if the seat was not the most comfortable)

I bought my Dad’s 1976 Renault LeCar from him and took advantage of the 38mpg when traveling back and forth to college and beyond. I could write a few chapters about adventures in that car until I sold it…

My first car was a 1955 Ford Custom. Rusted out lower fenders and rocker panels. I sure learned how to run an Oxy- Act torch. I sure was proud of it! My folks had a 1 car garage so it set out and my dad's car was in the garage. The first winter I was real proud. My dad's car wouldn't start but that old hand chock Ford did. It only started on 2 cylinders and by nursing that chock I got it up and running. Had to push dad's car out thru the snow to get it close enough to jump start his car. He never made fun of my rust bucket after that.

Mine was a rusted out 1968 Camaro, a little 6 cylinder with 3-speed on the floor. I didn’t know how to drive a standard but man, I had to have that car. Paid $200 for it and drove it for 4 years. It was so rusty that I could reach up under the back fender wall to open a toolbox in the trunk, where I’d locked my keys. Once I was locking the door, back when you had to hold in the latch button from the outside, and the handle came right off in my hand. Had to open the door with a screwdriver after that, which I always carried anyway cause I’d either have to clutch start it or use the screwdriver to jump the solenoid switch. And it used to get jammed up between 1st & 2nd gear so I’d have to lay underneath it and jiggle the linkage till it came unstuck. I loved that car.

57 Ford Fairlane 500. Looked a lot like this one, but not nearly that shiny. Had the 272 V8 in it and I got no idea whatever happened to it. I enlisted and I think my dad sold it. I bought it in 1965 so it was 8 years old at least and it had some miles on it. Rough miles, Indiana winters.

My first car was a ‘61 Buick Special, 4-door with an 8 cylinder aluminum block, with a 3 speed. That ugly car could “get scratch” in all three gears, but Dad made it clear that new tires would be bought by ME! I bought it when I was 16 for $150 (had a blown head gasket). Dad fixed it and I drove it for a year and sold it to a cousin for $175 and bought my first “truck”, a ‘63 Falcon station wagon (Lol) for $150. Sold that a year later for $150 and got my first ( real) pickup, a ‘64 Chevy step side with only 40k miles on it. That was in 1972. Great truck!
Drove it for several years and definitely got my 600 bucks worth out of it!!

First car ? 1957 Chevy BelAir
4-door sedan - bought it for
$150 in the summer of '66
when I was 17 yrs. ! Not nearly as
nice as this photo, but it ran and
got me wherever I needed to be !
Had a 265 cu. in. V-8 that the kid before me swapped in for the
original six, but no power steering
on a 5,200 lb. car - made for some strenuous effort to parallel-park
in downtown traffic (I only weighed
about 150 lbs.) !

Dad said he'd co-sign for a car if he got any input towards the choice -
big mistake on my part ! Got stuck with a '65 VW 'Bug' which I hated !
No horsepower to speak of, heater vents blew hot air in the summer,
and NO FREAKIN' RADIO ! Being a music lover ('60s Rock and Roll),
not having 'tunes' to cruise with
was intolerable !

(Did I mention how much
I HATED that car ?)

Those late 50's fords and chevies are classic examples of outstanding automotive styling. Chrysler, in my opinion, did not fare so well. The 57 fury and imperial - pretty ugly in my view. Then what I think is THE best example of the classic 1950's models. The Studebaker Golden Hawk.

1954 Chevy 4 Door Biscain. I was the 3Rd owner. First one babied it and the second changed the oil once in a year and a half. Changed the oil 3 times in 3 months before it came out clear. Took it in to get a front end alignment and had to come back 6 times before he could do it. My dad had the Motor manuals and I read them and then worked on the car.
"As long as it runs, it's yours. If it doesn't run and your working on it, it's yours. If it doesn't run and your not working on it, it's gone and you can walk forever!"
Car ran almost as much on sweat as it did on Gas. LOL

Til just 2 years ago I drove a 2001 Ram 1500 Laredo with the 318. Horrible gas mileage, but I loved it. Would have bought a brand new one, but have you seen those prices these days? I think I paid right around 18K for the 01. You can't buy one now for under 30.
