Those late 50's fords and chevies are classic examples of outstanding automotive styling. Chrysler, in my opinion, did not fare so well. The 57 fury and imperial - pretty ugly in my view. Then what I think is THE best example of the classic 1950's models. The Studebaker Golden Hawk.

My girlfriend's father had a Studebaker Hawk she used it to cruise around for 2 weeks while her mom and dad were vacationing and then asked me if I could turn the speedometer back. I had an electric drill crawled under and she had no idea what mileage it was. So I guessed she drove 400 miles. Wrong! Her dad went off on her. He goes on vacation comes home and his car has 352 miles less that it had when he left and more gas too. She didn't rat me out but I learned a life time lesson anyway. Don't do favors for girlfriends.

1968 VW Baja was my first. Then 1973 Oldsmobile Omega… then 1965 Chevrolet Van ( Scooby doo type). Those first 3 were great. Then the rest were after College etc.

Dang ! Paint that '57 Fury bright red, and you've got another 'Christine'
on your hands ! You're right - many Chrysler model styles of the '50s
were out in left field ! I actually LIKED
the Studebaker 'Hawk' or the 'Commander' model, although not
a fan of that make ! They were a
damn sight more stylish than most
of the Chrysler products !

1964 Ford Falcon. Got it in 1971. Three speed on the column. All manual down to the choke. One fan belt. About 3 dollars to fill the tank. Owned it for three years.

I feel like everybody I know had one of those as their first car, back in the day. 😂

Frist car 1965 Chevy El Camino 327 engine three speed. Traded it in for a 1968 Camaro 327 engine, that was the year that they didn’t use the Hurst four speed shifters.
Why?
Bought the Camaro for $2200 new out the door.
My most useful one was a 1965 Dodge van 318 engine, automatic transmission, short wheel base 90 inches that was the most popular wheel base for the surfers to own. I fixed it up for camping.
Chevy was the most popular van that the surfers used.
Now I have a 2000 Toyota Tundra and a 2017 Toyota Rav 4. RAV4 gets 32 mpg on the open road.
Had a Porsche once before getting married, wife was 19 and considered a teenager so I had to sell it because the insurance would of gone through the roof. Traded it in for a 65 Mustang which she was afraid to drive. So traded it for a 1965 Chevy Chevelle 6 banger.

Nice.
A friend of mine had a 65 Chevelle malibu, 327 that put out 350 hp stock from the factory. He would run it stock class at the Carlsbad drag strip. He had headers with cut outs the only modification that was legal to race stock class. Other people would complain about his HP but he was running stock in the 327 class so no change in the Christmas tree lighting, it was heads up racing, he had lots of trophies.

The problem with mine was there was nowhere to run it over there. We lived at almost 8000 feet elevation and the roads all went down, and not very quickly. All tight turns and switchbacks. Once down to sea level I could open it up for about 20 miles or so. Hang onto your hat!

My second car I bought was a 61Triumph TR3 rag top a month before I went into the Navy. My sister used and cared for my baby while I was in. My sister was rear-ended with my mother riding. Mom told the story best. She claimed my sister jumped out of the car went to the back puts her hands on her hips and shouts in the guy's face. Look what you've done! When my brother sees this he'll kill you repeating several times. I guess she put the fear of God in him. He left his car and started to run across a field. People that lived there called the police. Police came ran the man down in the field cuffed him and told my sister the driver was drunk and he was going to jail. Insurance fixed the TR3 better than new. My sister was hell on wheels. Long blonde hair with a nice body.

I really like all of the replys. Reminds me of the bull Sessions in college, especially in the first year when we were getting to know each other. Thanks to all who replied or read the posts.

1954 Nash Rambler, red with white top, custom continental kit, and a nude chrome lady for the hood ornament. I loved that car.
