Oh yeah here’s the update for Lake New Hogan. Two words should sum it up pretty good for the day, “Zara Spook!”

Shaver is tough to say the least. Huntington is much higher and better fishing. If you continue over the summit, there are several lakes and streams to explore. I've had some luck up higher.

I'm new to this fishing stage and fishing in general. My boys (age 5 and 7) said they want to learn how to fish so since I am from Castro Valley I thought I would take them to lake chabot. Could you have info on Lake Chabot?

Thanks

Never been there, never heard of it. But I looked it up. I see it is stocked with trout, but I would presume that as hot as it's been lately that if there are trout in there, they will be as deep as they can possibly go. Trout do not do well in water that is much above 70 degrees.

Take a look at this: https://www.lakechabotrecreation.com/fishing

There are also catfish and crappie in there. If you have more specific questions about fishing in general, please feel free to ask. We're here to help you out. Sound like fun with a 7 and a 5 year old.

Thanks Spiritof27.

So I got over zealous and went out and bought a bunch of stuff without knowing how to use or set any of it up (I'm such and idiot). Anyway, can anyone tell me how to rig up a pole if I have a Spring Oval Stick Slip Float, a high-low hook 2 arm and disc fishing sinker.

I appreciate the help.

Well sir, you got me. I never heard of any of that. So I'll just tell you some of what I do know about fishing for trout or catfish from the bank. The rig for trout is very simple. It's called a Carolina rig and you can look that up on the internet. You start with a slip sinker, which is a sinker with a hole running through it. Put that on you main line. Next put on a plastic bead. And then a swivel. Get you some 4 pound test fluorocarbon line and tie on about 2 feet or so of that to the other side of the swivel. On the end of that leader tie on a #8 or smaller single egg hook. You're done. Get you some Berkley Powerbait and put a glob of that on your hook and toss it out there as far as you can and be patient. Trout are not bottom feeders so you got to get your bait up off the bottom. The powerboat floats up off the bottom, and the sinker keeps it from just floating up to the surface. Berkley makes other floating stuff that works too. Mouse Tails. Salmon Eggs. Stuff like that. It all works and works well. Catfish are another matter. They will feed on the bottom, but not exclusively. So you can use the same Carolina rig for them. Just tie on a bigger hook. Probably a #1 or 1/0 circle hook. Get you a pair of panty hose and cut out some patches big enough to wrap around a chicken liver. Wrap you liver and wrap that up with miracle twine - it's stretchy and kinda sticky and you don't need to tie it. You can get it at Walmart or any sporting goods store. That will help keep your liver onto your hook. And the fish won't mind it at all.
As for using that other stuff you mentioned? I got no idea. Maybe somebody else will. Let us know how you do, and please post some pictures.

He's talking about the stick float with the spring on the bottom where line clips on, his 2 hook setup is wire with 2hooks at different lengths and disc sinker clips on the bottom of it, all of that said yes it is sold as a trout setup , some people use these setups for crappie, as far as the weight ,maybe its too much, but all in all ,personally I'd go with exact setup you recommended, good luck a nd tight lines

I would also use the setup that Spirit suggested, I mentioned your setup to Spirit, make sure if you use the rig you bought that you weight doesn't make your bobber underwater ,disc sinkers are usually used for bottom fishing
