Me thinks someone owns the pond/lake - stocks it themselves, pays for all costs, then they have right to charge you to fish - why not?
What about state owned lakes that still charge a fee to fish and have already been collecting taxes for everything else? Ever been to Oregon?

I’ve never been to a place where you have to pay to fish but I recently discovered that there is a place about 50 miles from my house where you pay $15 to fish all day. The predominant fish seems to be catfish and the place attracts the typical catfish crowd.
What do you guys think of these places?
Where in Maryland do you pay to fish.
the place attracts the typical catfish crowd.
What are you saying? Is that a good or a bad thing? I mean, you mentioned that as if we knew who you were talking about. Oh yeah, those people. What the hell? Come on now, you got some splainin to do.

I took that as a compliment. People smart enough to know where the fish are. No offense skunky. 🥴🤣

The only pay to fish areas here are privately owned. Access to ramps may be a fee, parks, camp grounds, marinas, usually 2to3 $. Most state maintained ramps, or TVA Ramps, Or Dept of Game and Fish are free. In N.C. The only times I've paid to park, or launch a boat was at Parks, Marinas, privately owned ramps. Camping at a campground, ramp is covered by camping fee. Keep fishing

There are a few fishing piers here in Hampton Roads, VA (James River, Elizabeth River) where one pays to fish. They are I suspect private piers. Some require that you show your license and others include a day license in the fee.

Yep. Apparently I just know where they used to be. The fish have moved on and left me stream side with my rod in my hand.
Paying a fee helps keep out the riff raff, whatever that is. In the Virginia state parks, with lakes sometimes, they only charged me $4 to get in the gate, could be a packed van load and those folks would take over the beaches, picnic areas, pavilions. I would have paid more to keep the crowds down.

Are you talking about Zetts in Inwood, WV?
Virginia state parks around Richmond. A higher fee would help keep the crowds down. West Virginia like that, too?

In my opinion we all pay. I have a private lake property. I don’t pay to fish...but. If a pay lake is 20 minutes away, stocked, not overcrowded or drive (gas and time) two hours, wait to launch, over fished, get skunked and free. If those are the types of choices I have I probably would pay.

But..... Fresh water wild caught VS. Purina fish chow. Might be tempted to try Gordens (never
have) or the old mac fillet-o-fish.
Just sayin
