Well, being from the land of 11, 348 ( or so) lakes, I can drive anywhere in, any direction and hit a lake in about 10 mins. If I go South where my son is going to school by Mankato, MN I can Fish Elysian, Tetonka, Fish, Rays, Frances, Washington, Madison, Big Jefferson, Little Jefferson, German, Duck, Ballantyne, Scott, Wita. All within about 10-12 miles of each other. Walleye, Crappie, Sunnies, Bass.
I realize I am spoiled. I would never dream of having to pay to fish.
Maybe I can stand being in ""little California" if I am this fortunate.

Me thinks someone owns the pond/lake - stocks it themselves, pays for all costs, then they have right to charge you to fish - why not?

Welcome Maryland fish.
I fish at a local private pond. The owner pays a lot to keep his ponds stocked and he feeds them every day so I don’t mind paying the $10 he charges to fish. It’s a catch and release pond but there are exceptions. The Bald Eagles get to keep what they catch. Almost every time I go I get to see one of them dive down and catch there dinner and take it back to the nest. That’s worth the fee in and of itself.

Pay to fish lakes would not do well there?

Look up Lake Amador, they stock truly monster fish, your chances of catching 2 pound and up is the reality, and everyone I know who has fished there has caught fish well over 5lbs

It depends on what the place offers. If it’s well maintained with good amenities, the fishing is good and it’s not just a crowded free for all I don’t mind pitching in a few bucks to keep it nice. If it’s a rat hole with trash all around, no bathrooms, crappy parking and tons of people everywhere I don’t spend a dime there even if the fishing is good. $15.00 is pretty expensive to fish for one day. I pay $11.00 a year with my license plates to park free at all places that charge for parking here in Idaho. Nobody here charges just to fish for the day. Very few places even charge for parking here. $5.00/day is the most I’ve ever had to pay here for parking and that was before I found out I could just pay the extra $11.00 when I get license plates and park wherever I want for a year.

I guess for my piece I really just like the enjoyment of getting out, not working, no cell phones, no email, just communing with nature. If I want to pay to be outdoors I go golfing or to the gun range ( yes indoors but hey, it's the GUN RANGE!!)
I don't eat fish and I agree that a crowded, dirty place is not my speed

Don't forget you have to pay for the body guards and their ammo to protect you from the mosquitos while fishing. Truth be told, I would have a place there for the non frozen months if it weren't for a wife and grand kids. I actually learned to fish on bluegill as a kid in Lake Nokomis Minneapolis. (Please excuse the spelling)

I used to fish a little loop separate by a bridge from the rest of the lake. I skipped school and hitch hiked when I was 9 in third grade. My brother was 12, so we were safe. LOL

Look at the state that is charging the fees and the debt the state is in. We here in the "fine" state of debt, Illinois, is charging fees on everything they can put a fee on. Vehicle license stickers went up 50 percent and small trailer stickers went from $18.00 to $118.00 a year ago. Most guys with small trailers are refusing to pay any fees at all, including my own son who purchased his 6X10 tilt trailer for $200 3 years ago. For naturally most of the local police force refuses to ticket in most cases like that. At some point our government officials have got to wake up and quit spending what isn't there to spend, R's and D's.
Just saying

I did no ice fishing back then. Dad was not into it and I could not afford an auger to sneak off on my own. I took that up in Maine and Alaska.
