I wouldn't think that was the norm.
I don't believe any pros have to pay anything.
I would think that they would kinda be like a sponsor. You don't have to pay them, do you?
If they contacted you to test THEIR tackle, then why should you have to pay anything?
I would tell them " I'll test anything you send me but I'm not payin you to send me stuff."
That's JMO though.

Absolutely. I’ve caught both. But I target sheepshead and have caught many…

Not sure of his location, but sheepshead are great eating fish, good fight and love bottom structure. Originally a Southern fish common to Florida, Carolinas, etc. they started showing up in VA and MD waters about 10 years ago. Now pretty plentiful once water starts to warm up (65+). Best bait around here is live sandfleas. Any areas holding structure on/around the OC Md and DE
Areas are good locations — jetty’s, breakwalls, bridge Poling’s, etc. where you find tog you’re likely to find sheepshead!

You should consider joining the ocean pines anglers club. Great resource for fishing info and meeting fellow anglers. They meet the 2nd Saturday of the month at the Library, 9:30…. Meeting this coming Saturday.

If nothing else free coffee and donuts, and always a good local guest speaker.

FYI, you do not need to be a member to attend!!!

Can be very productive. Canals are producing good right now, and nice size jimmies. Not Chesapeake crabs, but real decent. You can use box traps pretty much anywhere (outside the channels of course). You can trotline in the St Martin, assawomen bay and up any of the larger creeks. I think there are a couple of crabbing piers but can’t help you with that — Good Luck
