Took my son in law and grandson on Aquilla for some crappie fishing. They were stacked up on brush piles.
Had a great day and a great fish fry back home with the family

Very impressive catch! Your Grandson will always remember the day he went with Grandpa and Dad and caught his limit. Good for you.

Hi. Dennis here, nam vet and new to Texas I’ve decided channel catfish in cornmeal my favorite fresh water fish. Trying my luck in lake Conroe north area first with eager wife. Around Cagle park. Any good tips would be appreciated.

I don't fish out of Cagle much, but we have been putting in at Scott's Ridge and Stowaway both north of 1097 bridge. Before all this rain started we were catching 20+ channel and a few blues using shad we caught just before dawn at the boat ramp at Scott's ridge. The shad spawn was hot and heavy and we were scooping them up with a dip net. Our target fish is crappie, but with shad you catch everything. Monday we caught 9 crappie, 3 large blue gill, 3 nice size white bass, a couple gasper goo, a couple undersized hybrids, and 20+channel cats. We started at 1097 bridge early where the shad were all over the pilons and crappie and white bass were close to the surface. after that we hit some brush piles just north of 1097 on the east side, where we caught a few crappie, blue gill and several channel cats. Surprisingly the crappie seemed to hit fresh dead shad as well as live. The channel cats were also on the deeper bulk heads between 1097 and Stowaway on the east side and I am sure on the west side as well, but the water was calmer on the east bank. We fished fresh dead shad and a cork about 2-3 foot deep. Night crawlers work great as well. We even found cats sitting on standing timer in 20 foot of water. They are everywhere right now. Good luck and Thank You for your service.

Thank you sir. It was probably a once in a lifetime catch. Especially if I move back to 4 lb test.

Coffeeman, I’ve only used shad saltwater fishing for Reds. Keeping them alive was a challenge but the Reds hit them dead or alive. We were in my boat and fished at a HL&P discharge near Baytown, Tx. We had live and dead shrimp but weren’t catching anything. One of the guys started foul hooking the shad and put them in the aerator. The Reds tore them up. Shad must be a favorite of most fish, fresh or saltwater. A couple of guys were fishing behind us and asked us what we were using. I told them what we were doing and all he said was “bullshit”. They were using shrimp and didn’t get a bite all night. Couple of dumbasses if you ask me. We caught huge Reds all night. I didn’t know if were over limit or not but when we got back to the launch the game warden checked us and we were good to go. Thanks for sharing your information with me. Next time I bank fish I’ll net some shad and see what happens. Tight lines every time.

Hacksaw, I get the same type of response when people ask me what I caught them on and I tell them shad. Let me know if you have any success catching Crappie when you try it. Good luck!

That is a dandy coffeeman especially on light tackle 🤪 thank you for sharing 👍

Whitey, The stars happened to align that day. Unfortunately most days they break off and your always left wondering what kind of fish was on the other end.

That's a surprise for sure Coffeeman, congratulations on landing the beast on the Crappie rod.

Fredfish, Thanks for replying. While we were disappointed we didn't get on the Crappie this ole blue made it a memorable trip.

Coffeeman, those Crappie have a mind of their own. We’ve bought minnows before in case they didn’t want jigs. They never even looked at the minnow. Wasted money. Thanks for your estimates too. Tight lines.

Hacksaw, You are so right about Crappie having a mind of their own. Livescope has definitely confirmed that fact to me on multiple occasions. Honestly, I have my best luck using shad (my preferred bait) if I can catch them and they are the right size. April and May I can usually catch them right off the boat ramp just before dawn. They can be so abundant at times you can use a dip net and scoop them up. We keep the ones that die off and freeze them for later use with pool noodles and circle hooks. We set them about 7-10 ft down and usually catch a few blue cats in the 7-10 lb range. Perfect eating size.

There was an older gentleman that turned me on to using shad about 20 years ago. We fished in the same stumps in about 20 ft of water in April and May. He would always seem to catch his limit of Crappie and one day he was nice enough to give us some leftover shad. We immediately started catching crappie doubling our normal catch. Soon after that we had a couple of limits. They are hard to keep alive, but we found at times crappie would even hit fresh dead shad.

Good luck to you and thanks for sharing a picture of those 15 inchers.

Tough day for Crappie, but ended up catching this 20 lb blue cat which made our day. I caught it using a 12 ft ACC crappie rod with 8 lb test and a #2 hook. It took a little over 10 minutes to land it. Of course our crappie net barely fit over its head, but it was enough to land it. The livescope did not show this fish on the bottom I guess due to the rough water or some kind of turbulence on the bottom of the lake. I still can't believe we landed it on the setup I was using. For once I had my drag set correctly.

Went with the fishing partner, I think last week, to Lake Houston. We put in right at sunrise and started hitting his mapped structure. I used a 3/16th blue and chartreuse jig and a 3/16th white and chartreuse jig. I didn’t weigh any of them but the two biggest fish were 15” long. We guessed they were close to being two pounders. We fished until the wind picked up to about 10 to 15 mph and called it a day. Yup, that’s me.

Very nice! Anytime you catch 15 inch crappie it's a memorable day on the lake. I think your 2 lb estimate is spot on. I have caught a couple 15 inchers on Conroe this year and they were 2.05 and 2.1 lbs., both on jigs. Crazy how the big ones seem to hit the jigs over live bait.
