Haven't tried detroit yet this year, but hit the saginaw river yesterday and the walleye were hard to come by. Those we caught and all we saw were small. Probably saw about 1 keeper per hour between all the boats around us.

I think I'm just mad all the time. But I've been teaching high school for years. It takes all summer fishing to get the pissed wiped off my face, then they keep starting school earlier each year.

I usually go south. Good pier at detroit river wildlife refuge but it'll be packed any weekend when the wallie run. I also go up by Trenton and then up to bishop park.
Good luck

I'm hoping someone can clue me on good on-shore walleye spots and techniques for walleye. I've never had good luck with walleye. I jig like most everyone but never have good luck. With the current, I'm wonder how heavy my jigs should be. I think what I use are too light. I've every size and color rubber/plastic jigs I can find but never much success.

As soon as we get another 45 degree weekend day, I'll probably try under the Ambassador bridge or at Riverside park. Can anyone recommend good spots east of downtown?

Thanks in advance![/quote]

I'm trying to raise a fishing buddy. He caught this at a local creek. He gets really excited fighting anything.
However, he has started out-fishing me this year.
(I don't say much about the hat, he was born in Texas.)

Oakland County is a better bet. A lot more lakes. For easy access check out Holly State park, seven lakes state park. Ortonville recreation area has a couple lakes. Strawberry lake and gravel lake near Holly used to be good fishing (haven't tried them in many many years). Fenton area has limited access to Lake Fenton, Silver lake and lake ponemah. Also down around Argentine has a few places you can explore. I usually just open a map app and find a spot.

Welcome Lisa Marie,
I noticed you didn't get many responses for detroit river walleye. I'm new to this too and getting my son (13) into it. You can find a recent D river thread with some good advice from those more experienced.
However, Detroit river is happening right now. The biggest action is down by Trenton but with the warm weather this week I'm sure that's about to move. The water was packed with boats and the peer was shoulder to shoulder, but most people were catching. My son got two nice ones in 2 hours on 3/4 Oz rainbow jig with white flat tail (anything white was working).
Good luck. Nothing better than watching your kids catch fish.

We hit the shore yesterday and today (April 8) and people were hitting all over at the fishing peer south of Trenton. My son caught his first two keepers in two hours. We were there mid afternoon until after dark on Friday and saw a lot caught. We just spent a couple hours there on Saturday when he caught his two. It was shoulder to shoulder so we left. Now that I know where and how I'll take the boat down and hopefully avoid having people breathing down my neck.

Thanks for all the location information. What's the type of baits to use from shore?

Thanks. That'll be us... trying to figure it out.
Thinking we'll only have a couple days worth standing around in this week, but we'll give it a try- my son is all excited.

Great. Thanks for that help. My son and I always have a great time fishing together regardless of whether we catch fish. It helps to know a couple places to get lines in the water and spend time together. I know a lot of dads on here get how valuable that is and I'm glad I found this forum to help us get out more.

Hi, with spring break happening this week, I'd like to take my son to the Detroit River and try some fishing. Is there any way/place to fish from shore? I'd like to explore the area before dragging my boat down.
Thanks for any advice or help.

Thanks for those recommendations. I took my son up there last weekend. We tried 1/2oz jig with a couple different rubber baits and some crank baits at various locations- DNR launch near mouth, Gilson launch, and others around Bay City with no luck. We didn't feel bad, the only guys with some fish were boats coming back in from bay and even they reported not hitting much.
I did notice it's very shallow near the shore. I'm used to fishing Saint Clair river but want to expand out and try Saginaw and Detroit.
If nothing else, I feel good about taking my boat up there and now know where to launch.

Is there anywhere to fish walleye from the shore along the Saginaw River?
No ice, but itching to fish and not quite ready to get the boat out of winter storage.
Thanks for any tips.
