Cartwheeling smallmouth bass this morning while casting a Mepps #3 sized black fury spinner over a shallow rocky shoal. The added yellow grub tail makes this one irresistible for the smallies.

This bass struck as soon as I turned the reel handle half a crank. I sure love it when a random cast ends up being right over top of a waiting fish! I was entreated to a large variety of aerial acrobatics...including a boat side shower that got me pretty drenched from a series of tail scoop splashes and skitter scoots!

The water was as smooth as a sheet of turquoise linoleum this morning. What a great way to start the day!

A peaceful morning on the water...whether the fish are hungry or not!

Thank you Gordon! I was happy to squeeze in one more "outing" before leaving town for the week to visit family out of State.

Thank you Fredfish! Everything you said would definitely apply! For a moment I though he was going to get under the kayak and wrap up on my transducer arm! Plenty of vim and vigor in this customer. They are indeed a spectacular fighter!

I will sure miss being at the M & G next week. I had high hopes for squeezing that event into my Summer calendar this year. Turns out we'll be camping with one of our grand daughters that is really starting to enjoy the woodsy adventures and time around a camp fire.

Thank you Flyguy! Once I leave shore in those conditions it's hard to think about having to return! Overall I was out for 2.5 hours. Trolling 90% of the time only yielded a few faint hearted strikes (which I missed), so I resorted to casting instead for the wrap up. That paid off with just the one fish being caught and also missing another good strike on that same spinner. All in all a good day on the water.

I spent a fair amount of time trolling back and forth thru a school of cisco in some 40' water depths, but nothing would take a swipe at my lure offerings. Oh well...there is always next time!

Who knows Yaker, we may do like last year and have another at the end of the summer. Never say never.

Thank you Bassmatter! Now that the big "spawn" is over around here the fish have scattered a bit so I need to start looking in some of their other haunts! I was surprised at the lack of fish hanging in the rocks today.

Thankfully, this water is only a 10 minute drive from home so it is one of my most frequent places to go. The wind has kicked up this afternoon, but f things calm down later on I just might head out again and target the cisco that were marking up my graph!

Thank you Grizzly 17! I have always had a liking for using spinners. Maybe it's the vibration or color...but for the most part, they always catch fish if they are run in front of a hungry one!

As a kid, our "go to" set up was to troll a plain Jane Mepps Aglia #3 silver spinner with the bright red tube on the treble. We would use a 3/8 ounce inline Beadchain keel sinker to add some depth as we plied shoreline waters of Lake Huron near Alpena, MI. I have not done that in a long time...maybe I should re-kindle that old method!

Hmmm...you've got my attention! We have 2 more week long Michigan camping trips planned yet this Summer...one in July and then one in August. I'll keep an eye out for dates if something gets posted!
