Tight lines and tails up!!
Not Cabo, but the correct coast!
Can you guess the location?
Alot of fishermen (and Ladies) don't know that Makos are a sport fish and put on quite a show jumping and spinning!
This guy was finning on the surface and we couldn't tease him in with live bait and fly lining live sardines, so I set up a 7 kt troll with a Nomad DTX minnow and watched him submerge as we aproached from 100 yards out to our starboard. Sure enough, we were "fish on!" As soon as he was in our wake.
The BEST fish tacos and fried nuggets ever!!
I can share recipes if you like.
Be safe out there and add your own "Mako my day" story (fresh or salt).
Tight lines and tails up!
This is terribly sad. My son and I were just scouting for a twin engine hull that we could re power with some E Tecs.
Nice Jack....
Never caught one, and I feel your pain when it comes to yellows! I gotta make my way back down to SD. We did a 6 pack to Coronado and caught 1000lbs of yellow fin! It took a while to find em but once on them, we limited and held them there long enough for the captains friend to come up and get on em too!
Great trip...gotta go back!

Here's a picture of a yellowtail caught by
Brandon Dawson off of Crystal Pier, in San Diego. 32 lbs. A few days ago, while spear fishing at the same place he got a fifty pounder. He posted a picture of that also.
I asked him if I could post this and he said yes.
I've caught everything that I've gone after in the ocean, but I've never landed a yellowtail yet. It's not for lack of trying either. LOL
Just keep trying!
I was you for a couple of seasons and then picked one up trolling a Rapala X Rap. I then learned that I get yellows on the troll at 7 knots and also by fly lining live chovies or macks. It's truely about 50/50 so far, so I use both ways all the time. I have a pollicy...
If were moving, we're
12' Ugly stick 2 piece surf rod. I have 3 of them and they have fuji guides. $200. I pair them with an old, well maintainted, Shimano bait runner 6500. Great for wading out, making the cast and then backpeddling quickly with the baitrunner on and the bail closed. I've gotten tossed a couple of times, but in SoCal, it's worth it. I go after 100 lb batrays, leaopard sharks, and Shovelheads.
Tight lines and tails up!
(Penn makes a bait runner too for $200. I love it!)
The chineese grass carp in the arizona canals are a fantastic light tackle fight! ( catch and release only) I learned a tip that worked from my co-worker.
Ball up a slice of white bread as tight as you can, put a hook through it, then soak it in a little Marchino cherry juice! And hey.. if the fish aren't biting, you have a yummy snack!
It really does work and the carp ran me up and down the canal for a great fight.

The pirate is called "my best friend"
He has a beer! 🤣
Everything in the ocean eats squid. Fresh frozen should be available in the stores or bait shops. Surgical type gloves if you dont want to stink all day! Seaguls will steal it all in a flash if you dont put it in a tupperware type container!
4oz sand dart with a 2 hook dropper loop (shrimp fly) works well.
Watch the double double uni knot on you tube and just use it as a wind on leader.
